Responsibilities and Role Overview

Nurse Practitioner – Poison Center Specialist will independently manage complex poison exposure cases, providing advanced toxicology assessment and evidence‑based treatment recommendations to the public and healthcare professionals. Duties include conducting comprehensive exposure evaluations, determining severity and appropriate level of care, guiding emergency and inpatient management, and collaborating closely with physicians, emergency departments, and other healthcare providers to ensure optimal patient outcomes. The Specialist serves as a clinical expert and resource within the poison center, supports and mentors staff and trainees, participates in quality assurance and case review activities, and contributes to education, outreach, and potential research initiatives.

Job Duties

• Provide informational assistance by telephone to health care professionals and consumers about poison exposures.
• Orient and mentor new colleagues and rotators.
• Take clinical call on a regular basis.
• Provide toxicology educational presentations to colleagues and other healthcare professionals.
• Complete various projects as assigned.

Required Qualifications

• Doctor of Pharmacy (PharmD), Nurse Practitioner, or Physician Assistant degree required OR Bachelor’s degree in nursing or Associate’s degree in nursing (ADN) with 25 years of nursing experience OR pharmacy degree with national certification as a specialist in poison information (CSPI) and a minimum of five years of recent poison center specialist experience.
• Six months experience with previous poison center clinical call for CSPI Registered Nurses required.
• Thorough knowledge of clinical toxicology.
• Ability to perform prolonged mental concentration to read and gather information.
• Skill in typing and use of computer.
• Ability to perform complex math calculations.
• Ability to communicate effectively both verbally and in writing.
• Skill in organizing multiple tasks.
• Ability to work a flexible schedule, including day, evening, night, weekend, and holiday shifts.
• Currently licensed as a Registered Nurse, Pharmacist, Nurse Practitioner, or Physician Assistant in the state of Nebraska.
• Certification as a Specialist in Poison Information (CSPI) by the American Association of Poison Control Centers or American Board of Applied Toxicology.
• Maintenance of certification by successfully completing the CSPI examination every seven years.

Preferred Qualifications

• Certified Specialist in Poison Information for six or more years.
• Experience leading/supervising a team.

Shift Details

Full Time | 0.9 FTE | 36 Scheduled Weekly Hours | Varied Evening Hours | 9 Hour Shifts | 11 AM-1 AM Shift Timeframe | Every other weekend requirement (including call).
