Job summary

UW Health's Emergency Department in Madison seeks a Nurse Practitioner or Physician Assistant to join a team of ~25 APPs and 50 faculty, delivering high-quality care to a busy patient population.

You will evaluate and manage patients in collaboration with onsite physicians, order and interpret studies, and prescribe medications. The role offers varied shifts across days, evenings, nights, weekends, and call, with 80-100% FTE in a dynamic academic hospital system.

Qualifications

  • Master's or Doctorate in Nursing (NP) or PA program approved by a relevant licensure body.
  • Active Wisconsin NP or PA licensure required.
  • Board certification as NP (Emergency or Family) or PA certification preferred.
  • DEA license or ability to obtain prior to hire.

Responsibilities

  • Evaluate, diagnose and treat a variety of patient acuities in collaboration with on-site physician.
  • Order and interpret labs and imaging as part of care for ED patients.
  • Order and prescribe medications for emergency care.
  • Perform routine procedures such as suturing, arthrocentesis, joint reductions, and abscess I&D.

80-100% FTE, nine hour shifts. Hours will vary to provide appropriate coverage and to meet the needs of the department, which will include days, evenings, nights, weekends, and call.

The Emergency Department is seeking a highly motivated NP/PA to work alongside a strong cohort of approximately 25 advanced practice providers and 50 core faculty to help aid in the evaluation and management of patients in our busy University Hospital and East Madison Hospital.

We are seeking a Nurse Practitioner OR Physician Assistant

We are seeking a Nurse Practitioner OR Physician Assistant:

  • The Emergency Departments (ED) have a combined annual volume of over 114,000 visits/year. Many of our NP/PA hold leadership positions, both within the ED and throughout the hospital system. Working alongside our faculty and residents, you play an integral role in the delivery of patient care.
  • Evaluate and examine, diagnose, and treat a variety of patient acuities in collaboration with the onsite physician.
  • Order and interpret appropriate laboratory and imaging studies.
  • Order and prescribe appropriate medications for patients in Emergency Care.
  • Perform routine procedures such as suturing, arthrocentesis, joint reduction, incision and drainage of abscesses, with potential to learn and perform more advanced tasks such as endotracheal intubation and central line placement.
Education
  • If Nurse Practitioner: Master's or Doctorate's degree from accredited Nursing Program.
  • If Physician Assistant: Bachelor's or Master's degree from accredited PA Program.
Licenses and Certifications
  • Minimum: State of Wisconsin NP or PA licensure.
  • If Nurse Practitioner:
    • Active RN and APRN certifications and licenses, including prescriptive authority, in state(s) of practice AND
    • Active board certification as a NP in area of clinical practice. These may include Emergency or Family.
  • If Physician Assistant:
    • Active PA license, including prescriptive authority, in state(s) of practice AND
    • Active PA board certification.
  • All Nurse Practitioner and Physician Assistant applicants must have:
    • Active DEA license or ability to apply for such license prior to or upon hire.
