Job Summary

The Pain Management Nurse Practitioner provides advanced nursing care for patients experiencing acute, chronic, or cancer-related pain. The NP evaluates, diagnoses, and manages pain conditions using pharmacologic and non-pharmacologic therapies, working in collaboration with physicians and multidisciplinary teams to improve patient quality of life. Conduct detailed patient histories and physical examinations focused on pain assessment.

• Order and interpret diagnostic tests including imaging, labs, and nerve studies.
• Develop and implement individualized pain management plans incorporating medications, interventional procedures, physical therapy, and complementary therapies.
• Manage opioid and non-opioid medication regimens with careful monitoring for efficacy and safety.
• Perform or assist with interventional pain procedures as appropriate and within scope.
• Educate patients and families on pain management strategies, medication use, and potential side effects.
• Monitor and document patient progress, side effects, and treatment adjustments.
• Coordinate care with primary care providers, specialists, physical therapists, psychologists, and social workers.
• Participate in pain management program development, quality improvement, and research initiatives.
• Maintain compliance with regulatory and legal guidelines regarding controlled substances and pain treatment.

Qualifications

• Master’s or Doctorate degree from an accredited Nurse Practitioner program.
• If APRN was licensed prior to August 1, 1995, master’s degree in nursing is preferred.
• Experience in pain management, anesthesia, palliative care, or related field preferred
• Current licensure as a Registered Nurse and Nurse Practitioner in each state of practice.
• Current Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) permit to prescribe controlled substances in each state of practice.
• State Controlled Substance License (if required by State)
• National board certification as a Family (FNP-BC) or (FNP-C), Adult-Gerontology Primary Care (AGPCNP-BC) or (A-GNP), Adult-Gerontology Acute Care (AGACNP-BC) or ACNPC-AG), Acute Care Adult (ACNP-BC), Adult (ANP-C)
• Obtains and subsequently maintains required specific competencies and certifications as outlined on privilege form.
• Privileging documents and related credentialing requirements will supersede this job description in defining minimum qualifications, criteria, and scope of practice, if variation between documents exists.
