Description

Northwestern Medicine offers an exciting opportunity for a Nurse Practitioner or Physician Assistant to join our outpatient Medical Weight Management department within the Digestive Health Institute (DHI). The DHI comprises approximately 60 physicians and 26 APPs across specialties such as Gastroenterology, Hepatology, GI Surgery, Colorectal Surgery, and Lifestyle Medicine.

The APP will primarily work with patients who have already completed a physician visit, with a small volume of new patients. The patient panel is limited to individuals with a BMI ≥ 30 and specific qualifying diagnoses, including pre/post endo bariatric surgery, pre/post bariatric surgery, complex GI surgery needs, pre-transplant surgery, or digestive diseases requiring weight loss (e.g., MAFLD, GERD).

Schedule

Monday to Friday, days; 4 days of clinical work (32 hours outpatient clinic), 1 administrative day. No nights, weekends, holidays, or on-call duties.

Essential Functions

Provide clinical expertise including diagnosis and management of health problems, oversee health outcomes, collaborate with physicians and other health professionals, develop educational programs, mentor students, participate in quality improvement and research initiatives, and serve as a patient advocate and role model.

Responsibilities
  • Conduct health assessments, physical exams, and provide direct patient care.
  • Prescribe medications and therapies, order and interpret tests and procedures.
  • Document all care and education in medical records.
  • Refer patients to appropriate disciplines and consult as needed.
  • Incorporate research and clinical expertise into decision-making.
  • Maintain professional appearance and demeanor, uphold certifications, and participate in ongoing education.
  • Participate in committees, develop educational programs, and serve as a preceptor and educator.
Qualifications

Required:

  • Master’s degree from an accredited nursing or Physician Assistant program.
  • Current Illinois RN license and APRN license or Physician Assistant license.
  • Certification as an APRN or Physician Assistant.
  • Credentialed through the Medical Staff Office.
  • BLS certification from the American Heart Association.
  • Minimum of 2 years of APP clinical experience.

Preferred:

  • Experience with prescribing/managing GLP-1s.
  • Comfort with independent practice for both new and returning patients.
  • Experience coaching on lifestyle modifications.
  • Ability to collaborate within multidisciplinary teams.
