Job summary

The Indian Health Service is seeking a Nurse Practitioner to deliver compassionate care focused on American Indian and Alaska Native communities, supporting health and well-being where it is most needed.

You will assess patients, develop treatment plans, diagnose common conditions, prescribe medications, and educate patients on managing illnesses, with rotating shifts and on‑call duties as required.

Qualifications

  • Graduate or higher-level degree in nursing or an advanced practice specialty from an accredited program recognized by the U.S. Department of Education.
  • Current, active, unrestricted RN license; advanced practice nursing positions require a specialty license appropriate to the clinical area.
  • At least one (1) year of specialized nursing experience equivalent to the next lower federal grade level.
  • Successful completion of a federal background investigation as a condition of employment.
  • Must meet U.S. citizenship, Selective Service registration (for applicable candidates), and federal E‑Verify eligibility. Conditions of employment include probationary period, rotating shifts, and on‑call duties as outlined by the position.

Responsibilities

  • Analyze and interpret patient histories, symptoms, physical findings, and diagnostic information to develop appropriate diagnoses.
  • Develop treatment plans based on scientific rationale, standards of care, and professional practice guidelines.
  • Diagnose or treat acute health care problems such as illnesses, infections, and injuries.
  • Prescribe medications based on efficacy, safety, dosage, and frequencies.
  • Educate patients about self-management of acute or chronic illnesses, tailoring instructions to individual circumstances.
