Job summary

Indian Health Service is seeking a Nurse Practitioner to deliver compassionate care focused on American Indian and Alaska Native communities. The role includes diagnosing, treating, and managing acute and chronic illnesses, with an emphasis on patient education and self-management strategies.

The NP will develop evidence-based treatment plans, interpret patient information, and prescribe medications when appropriate, while adhering to professional standards and federal guidelines.

Qualifications

• Education: Graduate or higher-level degree in nursing or an advanced practice specialty from an accredited program recognized by the U.S. Department of Education.
• Licensure: Current, active, unrestricted RN license; advanced practice nursing positions require a specialty license appropriate to the clinical area.
• Experience: At least one (1) year of specialized nursing experience equivalent to the next lower federal grade level (e.g., GS-10 for GS-11). Experience may include private or public sector roles.
• Background Investigation: Successful completion of a federal background investigation as a condition of employment.
• Other Requirements: Must meet U.S. citizenship, Selective Service registration (for applicable candidates), and federal E-Verity eligibility. Conditions of employment include probationary period, rotating shifts, and on-call duties as outlined by the position.

Responsibilities

• Analyze and interpret patient histories, symptoms, physical findings, and diagnostic information to develop appropriate diagnoses.
• Develop treatment plans based on scientific rationale, standards of care, and professional practice guidelines.
• Diagnose or treat acute health care problems such as illnesses, infections, and injuries.
• Prescribe medications based on efficacy, safety, dosage, and frequencies.
• Educate patients about self-management of acute or chronic illnesses, tailoring instructions to individual circumstances.
