For more than 125 years, Backus Hospital has been the primary source of healthcare services for much of Eastern Connecticut. Backus is home to the only trauma center in New London and Windham counties, and is the only area hospital with LIFE STAR helicopter services. The Hospital delivers and coordinates a continuum of high-quality healthcare with the goal of improving the health of its communities.
Advanced Practitioner Role Scope
We are seeking a Nurse Practitioner or Physician Assistant nocturnist to care for patients in the Medical ICU (MICU) and Progressive Care Unit (PCU).
The Advanced Practice Practitioner (APP) will be an integral member of the care delivery team, including Hospitalist Physicians and APPs as well as Pulmonary and Critical Care Medicine (PCCM) Physicians, Nursing, and Respiratory Therapy. The APP will be the overnight provider caring for the MICU patients directly, ensuring appropriate patient care, documentation, and continued progression of care with reviewing and interpreting lab and imaging studies, bedside rounding with RNs and RTs, and performing ICU procedures including central lines and arterial lines. The APP will collaborate with the on-call intensivist and hospitalist, partner with the Hospitalist Nocturnist to take new ICU admissions, facilitate early consultations with PCCM, and coordinate patient transfers to higher care facilities as needed. The APP will also perform night bedside rounds on PCU patients and work with Nursing Supervisors to evaluate patients for stepdown out of PCU. Additionally, the APP will respond to all Rapid Response and CardioPulmonary Response codes for all inpatients.
Schedule: This provider will work an average of 3 twelve-hour shifts per week (36 hours), from 7 p.m. to 7 a.m., with an expectation of working one weekend per month on average.

Advanced Practitioner Requirements
· Graduate of an accredited Physician Assistant/Nurse Practitioner Master’s program
· Licensed or eligible for licensure as a Physician Assistant or APRN in Connecticut
· Certification or eligibility for certification as a Physician Assistant or Acute Care Board Certified APRN
· Preferably one year of inpatient or ICU experience; new graduates with relevant clinical experience may be considered
· Strong clinical acumen and communication skills, with the ability to adapt quickly and work well within a team
· Demonstrates intellectual maturity and a team-focused approach to collaboration
