Job description

Nurse Practitioner / Physician Assistant (APP) - Medical Intensive Care

Work where every moment matters.

Every day, almost 30,000 Hartford HealthCare employees come to work with one thing in common: Pride in what we do, knowing every moment matters here. We invite you to become part of Connecticut’s most comprehensive healthcare network.

Backus Hospital

For more than 125 years, Backus Hospital has been the primary source of healthcare services for much of Eastern Connecticut. Backus is home to the only trauma center in New London and Windham counties, and is the only area hospital with LIFE STAR helicopter services. The Hospital delivers and coordinates a continuum of high-quality healthcare with the goal of improving the health of its communities.

Advanced Practitioner Role Scope

We are seeking a Nurse Practitioner or Physician Assistant nocturnist to care for patients in the Medical ICU (MICU) and Progressive Care Unit (PCU).

The Advanced Practice Practitioner (APP) will be an integral member of the care delivery team, including Hospitalist Physicians and APPs as well as Pulmonary and Critical Care Medicine (PCCM) Physicians, Nursing, and Respiratory Therapy. The APP will be the overnight provider caring for MICU patients directly, ensuring appropriate patient care, documentation, and care progression by reviewing labs and imaging, performing bedside rounds with RNs and RTs, and ICU procedures like central and arterial lines. The APP will collaborate with the on-call intensivist and hospitalist, manage ICU admissions, facilitate early PCCM consultations, and coordinate patient transfers to higher care levels. The APP will also perform night bedside rounds on PCU patients, work with Nursing Supervisors to evaluate patients for stepdown care, and respond to Rapid Response and Cardiopulmonary Response codes for all inpatients.

Schedule: The provider will work approximately 3 twelve-hour shifts per week (7 p.m. - 7 a.m.), including one weekend per month on average.

Benefits for Advanced Practitioners

Hartford HealthCare offers support and mentorship for both new and experienced providers through on-the-job training, classroom instruction, and procedural training. Our benefits include:

  • Leadership development through Hartford HealthCare’s Professional Leadership Development Institute
  • Credentialing privileges at Backus Hospital
