Center for Alzheimer Research and Treatment (CART) Nurse Practitioner

Full Time/ 40 Hours

Job Summary

The Center for Alzheimer Research and Treatment (CART), and Alzheimer Prevention Program, at Brigham and Women’s Hospital (BWH) is a $100+ million-dollar research enterprise, internationally recognized leader in Alzheimer’s disease (AD) clinical research, with funding from the NIH, industry, and philanthropic sources.

As the CART NP, management of protocols require participant informed consent, physical exams, initial and follow-up medical assessments, laboratory test review, and many of which require lumbar punctures and study drug administration by infusion or injection.

As such, the CART NPs are critical members of a multi-disciplinary clinical research team that is working to deliver cutting-edge experimental treatments to older adults with or at risk for AD. They help prioritize safety and participant experience while adhering to study protocols and regulatory requirements.

Primary Duties
  • Delivering patient-centered care at CART.
  • Creating a therapeutic environment where research participants and families feel safe and cared for, including providing information related to study medication, goals, and objectives.
  • Collaborating with principal investigators on IRB-approved protocols to ensure safe and precise conduct of each study.
  • Obtaining informed consent from participants (with or without cognitive impairment) and study partners prior to participation.
  • Utilizing study-specific data collection tools, completing assessments (physical exam, neurological exam, diagnosis confirmation, etc.), and study-related observations.
  • Engaging family members and others to assess changes in medical conditions and medications.
  • Documenting adverse events and following up with sponsors and clinical teams.
  • Reviewing laboratory tests and ECGs for safety.
  • Disclosing AD biomarker and genetic testing results following training.
  • Reviewing brain MRI scans for abnormalities following training.
  • Performing lumbar punctures following training.
  • Participating in recruitment activities, reviewing phone screens and medical records for eligibility, contacting potential participants, and attending recruitment events.
  • Reviewing medical records to verify eligibility before screening.
  • Performing other duties as assigned.
Secondary Duties
  • Administering investigational drugs and monitoring participants.
  • Executing trial procedures with attention to detail.
  • Administering study drugs via infusion and other modalities, obtaining IV access, operating infusion pumps, performing phlebotomy, and monitoring safety.
  • Registering participants in sponsor systems, pending orders, and liaising with research pharmacy.
Qualifications

Education:

  • Master's, DNP, or PhD in Nursing required, accredited by CCNE or NLNAC.
  • Current Family Nurse Practitioner Certification required.
  • Valid prescriptive authority from MA DPH and Federal DEA required.
  • APRN license to practice in Massachusetts required.

Experience:

  • Minimum 1 year recent clinical research experience required.
  • Minimum 1 year recent clinical NP experience caring for neurology patients required.
  • Ambulatory care experience preferred.
  • Peripheral IV and/or phlebotomy skills preferred.
  • Experience caring for Alzheimer’s patients preferred.

Other:

  • Completion of CITI training required; can be completed after hire.
  • Ability to multi-task, prioritize, and stay organized is essential.
  • Membership in professional organizations and certification in ambulatory care preferred.
  • Ability to work weekends per MNA contract.
