Job description

The Center for Alzheimer Research and Treatment (CART), and Alzheimer Prevention Program, at Brigham and Women's Hospital (BWH) is a $100+ million-dollar research enterprise, internationally recognized leader in Alzheimer's disease (AD) clinical research, with funding from the NIH, industry, and philanthropic sources.
As the CART NP, management of protocols require participant informed consent, physical exams, initial and follow-up medical assessments, laboratory test review, and many of which require lumbar punctures and study drug administration by infusion or injection.
As such, the CART NPs are critical members of a multi-disciplinary clinical research team that is working to deliver cutting-edge experimental treatments to older adults with or at risk for AD. Though there are differences between a clinical trial environment such as CART and that found in clinical units, we are looking for an NP who can help us prioritize the safety and experience of research participants while adhering to study protocols and regulatory requirements, and to join us on our mission to find more effective treatments for AD.
Primary Duties:
*Delivering patient-centered care at CART.
*Creating a therapeutic environment in which research participants and families of participants with impaired memory and limited comprehension, feel safe and cared for, including providing information relative to study medication, study goals, and objectives.
*Collaborating with principal investigators on IRB-approved protocols to ensure the safe and precise conduct of each study.
*Obtaining informed consent from participants (with or without cognitive impairment) and study partners prior to participation in research studies.
*Utilizing study-specific data collection tools, completing clinical research assessments (ex: general physical exam, neurological exam, cognitive disorder diagnosis confirmation, Columbia-Suicide Severity Rating Scale) and study-related observations.
*Engaging family members and others interacting with study participants to assess changes in medical conditions and medications.
*Documenting adverse events and severe adverse events and following up with the sponsor and participants' clinical team as necessary.
*Reviewing laboratory tests and ECGs for safety.
*Disclosing AD biomarker and genetic testing results following appropriate training.
*Reviewing brain MRI scans for study-related abnormalities following appropriate training.
*Performing lumbar punctures following appropriate training.
*Engaging in recruitment of research participants, including reviewing phone screens and medical records to determine eligibility of potential participants, contacting potential participants and study partners to review research studies, and attending research recruitment events.
*Reviewing medical records to verify participant eligibility before the screening visit.
*Other duties as assigned by the supervising physician or leadership team.
Secondary Duties:
*Administering investigational drugs and the related monitoring of participants taking part in CART's research protocols.
*Utilizing a high degree of detail to properly time and execute all required elements of the clinical trial including medication administration, sample collection, and handling.
*Administering study drugs via infusion and to a lesser extent other modalities (ex: intramuscular injection, intranasal administration), independently obtaining intravenous access, operating infusion pumps, performing phlebotomy, and monitoring participants for safety and side effects.
*Registering participants in sponsor IXRS systems, pending EPIC orders for drug assignment, and liaising with BWH research pharmacy (IDS).

Education:

  • 1. Completion of Master's, DNP or PhD Degree in Nursing required. Completion of a Master's or post Masters' degree in adult or family NP program accredited by the Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education (CCNE) or the National League for Nursing Accrediting Commission (NLNAC) required.

  • 2. Current Family Nurse Practitioner Certification by an accredited APRN certifying body required.

  • 3. Valid prescriptive authority from both MA DPH and Federal DEA required.

  • 4. Current APRN license to practice in Massachusetts required.

Experience:

  • 1. Minimum 1 year recent clinical research experience required.

  • 2. Minimum 1 year recent clinical nurse practitioner experience caring for a Neurology focused patient population required.

  • 3. Clinical Nurse practitioner experience in an ambulatory care setting strongly preferred.

  • 4. Peripheral IV and/or phlebotomy skill strongly preferred.

  • 5. Experience care for an Alzheimer's Disease focused patient population strongly preferred.

Other:

  • Completion of Collaborative IRB Training Initiative (CITI) training and recertification required - Training may be completed after hire.

  • Ability to multi-task, prioritize effectively, and remain organized and detail-oriented while completing tasks is required for success in this role.

  • Membership in professional organizations is recommended and nursing certification in Ambulatory Care or an Ambulatory Specialty area is preferred.
