Job summary

Wellpath / Correct Care Solutions is seeking a Nurse Practitioner for the San Luis Obispo County Jail to deliver primary and urgent care to incarcerated patients under the supervision of the Site Medical Director. Compensation ranges from $77.87 to $86.52 per hour, and the PRN schedule averages about 10 hours weekly with weekend coverage.

The role requires NP licensure in California, CPR certification, and experience in corrections settings or emergency care. Comprehensive benefits offered.

Qualifications

  • Graduate of an accredited nursing school.
  • Advanced degree in an approved and accredited Nurse Practitioner program.
  • Prior medical/surgical and/or emergency/trauma experience and corrections experience is preferred.
  • Must have the patience and tact to deal with the inmate patient population and ability to work effectively in the corrections environment.
  • Scheduling flexibility is required to rotate hours and shifts, and to be called during emergency situations to provide coverage.

  • Maintain patient confidentiality and privacy in accordance with accepted practices for incarcerated individuals.
  • Provide input into facility mandatory committees as requested.

Responsibilities

The Nurse Practitioner under the supervision of the Site Medical Director and other site Physicians offers a comprehensive range of medical services to incarcerated patients in accordance with established policy and state guidelines. They ensure necessary documentation of services is provided to the Site Medical Director or designee to monitor the provision of clinical services. Additionally, they communicate scheduling changes to the Medical Director and Health Services Administrator and make arrangements for coverage of medical services if unavailable for an extended period of time.

  • Conduct routine and emergency medical care for inmates, including chronic care clinics, infirmary rounds, and emergency treatment on site.

Additional Details

NPs in the San Luis Obispo County Jail provide primary and urgent medical care to patients in a correctional setting. Responsibilities may include conducting patient assessments, diagnosing and treating acute and chronic conditions, ordering and reviewing diagnostic tests, prescribing medications, and collaborating with nursing staff and other healthcare professionals to ensure continuity of care. Candidates should be comfortable with suturing, incision and drainage (abscesses common), basic wound care and debridement, splinting/minor fracture management, EKG interpretation, and emergency response (codes and overdoses). This is a PRN position averaging approximately 10 hours per week, with some weekend coverage required.
