Job summary

Wellpath is seeking a Nurse Practitioner to deliver primary and urgent medical care to incarcerated patients within a correctional setting. The role involves patient assessments, diagnosing and treating conditions, prescribing medications, and working with nursing staff to ensure continuity of care.

The position is PRN (approximately 10 hours per week) with weekend coverage may be required, and requires NP licensure in the state and current CPR certification.

Qualifications

  • Coordinate coverage with Medical Director/Health Services Administrator and provide input to facility committees as requested.
  • Maintain patient confidentiality and privacy in accordance with incarcerated patient guidelines.

About This Role

Under the supervision of the Site Medical Director and other site physicians, the Nurse Practitioner (NP) offers a comprehensive range of medical services to incarcerated patients in accordance with established policy and state guidelines. The NP ensures necessary documentation of services is provided to the Site Medical Director or designee to monitor the provision of clinical services, communicates scheduling changes to the Medical Director and H.S.A., and makes arrangements for coverage of medical services if unavailable for an extended period of time.

Additional Details

Our NP at the San Luis Obispo County Jail provides primary and urgent medical care to patients in a correctional setting. Responsibilities may include conducting patient assessments, diagnosing and treating acute and chronic conditions, ordering and reviewing diagnostic tests, prescribing medications, and collaborating with nursing staff and other healthcare professionals to ensure continuity of care. Candidates should also be comfortable with suturing, incision and drainage (abscesses are extremely common), basic wound care and debridement, splinting/minor fracture management, EKG interpretation, and emergency response (codes and overdoses). This is a PRN position averaging approximately 10 hours per week, with some weekend coverage required.

What You Bring To The Table
Education
  • A graduate of an accredited school of nursing
  • An advanced degree in an approved and accredited Nurse Practitioner program
Experience
  • Prior medical/surgical and/or emergency/trauma experience and corrections experience is preferred.
  • Must have the patience and tact to deal with the inmate patient population and ability to work effectively in the corrections environment.
  • Scheduling flexibility is required to be able to rotate hours and shifts, if needed, and to be called during emergency situations to provide coverage.
Licenses/Certifications
  • Must have and maintain current licensure as a Nurse Practitioner within the state of employment.
  • Must have and maintain current CPR certification.

  • Maintain patient confidentiality and privacy in accordance with accepted practices for incarcerated individuals.
  • Provide input into facility mandatory committees as requested.
