Job summary

Wellpath seeks a Nurse Practitioner for a corrections facility in Ventura, CA. This PRN/as-needed role delivers comprehensive medical services to inmate patients under supervision of the Site Medical Director and physicians.

Responsibilities include on-site care, documentation in SOAP format, emergency coverage, and coordination with medical leadership. Requires NP licensure in CA and CPR certification; prior corrections or emergency experience is preferred.

Qualifications

  • Graduate of an accredited school of nursing.
  • Advanced degree in an approved NP program.
  • Prior medical/surgical and/or emergency/trauma experience preferred.
  • Corrections environment experience is advantageous.
  • Must hold NP license in state and CPR certification.

Responsibilities

  • Conduct routine and emergency medical care for inmates on-site.
  • Document care in SOAP format and follow formulary regimens.
  • Coordinate coverage with Medical Director and Health Services Administrator.
  • Maintain patient confidentiality for incarcerated individuals.
  • Participate in facility committees as requested.

How you make a difference

The Nurse Practitioner(NP) under the supervision of the Site Medical Director and other site Physicians, offers a comprehensive range of medical services to incarceratedpatientsin accordance withestablished policy and state guidelines. They ensure necessary documentation of services is provided to the Site Medical Director ordesigneetomonitorthe provision of clinical services. Additionally, they communicate scheduling changes to the Medical Director andH.S.A. andmake arrangementsfor coverage of medical services if unavailable for an extendedperiod of time.

Key Responsibilities
  • Conducts routine and emergency medical care for inmates, including chronic care clinics, infirmary rounds, and emergency treatment on-site.

  • Adheres toestablishedpolicies and procedures for medical care, including documentation in SOAP format, adherence to formulary regimens, andutilizingavailable in-house resources for treatment.

  • Assumes responsibility and accountability for individual judgments and actions, while also reporting any concerns or questions to the Medical Director or Health Services Administrator.

  • Maintainspatient confidentiality and privacyin accordance withaccepted practices for incarcerated individuals.

  • Providesinput into facility mandatory committees asrequested.

Additional Details

This role will be a true PRN/As needed role, with coverage being needed periodically to cover time off for our full time providers.

Candidates should be comfortable with substance withdrawal management, partnering with psych NP's and behavioral health staff, infectious disease management, MAT and standardized protocols (Title 15/NCCHC/ACA).

In addition, candidates should feel comfortable doing suturing, incision and draining (abscesses are extremely common), basic wound care and debridement, splinting/minor fracture management, EKG interpretation, and emergency response (codes and overdoses)

Qualifications & Requirements
Education
  • A graduate of an accredited school of nursing

  • An advanced degree in an approved and accredited Nurse Practitioner program.

Experience
  • Prior medical/surgical and/or emergency/trauma experience and corrections experience is preferred.

  • Must have the patience and tact to deal with the inmatepatientpopulation and ability to work effectively in the corrections environment.

  • Scheduling flexibility is also required to be able to rotate hours and shifts, if needed, and to be called during emergency situations to provide coverage.

Licenses/Certifications
  • Must have andmaintaincurrent licensure as a Nurse Practitioner within the state of employment.

  • Must have andmaintaincurrent CPR certification.
