Job Title: Nurse Practitioner

Supervised by: Clinic Medical Director

Department: Rural Health Clinic

Job Summary

Under the supervision of the Clinic Medical Director or designated staff physicians, the Nurse Practitioner provides comprehensive primary healthcare services as a member of the healthcare team. Responsibilities include health assessments, diagnosis, management of acute and chronic illnesses, and promoting overall health and wellness. Outpatient primary care experience is preferred.

Duties And Responsibilities
  • Perform comprehensive health assessments, including medical history, physical examinations, and ordering diagnostic tests to evaluate patients' conditions.
  • Diagnose and manage common acute and chronic illnesses, including minor trauma and episodic problems.
  • Prescribe medications and treatments, including detailed instructions for administration.
  • Administer and recommend vaccinations following recommended guidelines.
  • Provide counseling and education to patients and families regarding preventive care, lifestyle modifications, and disease management.
  • Perform minor surgical procedures and initiate life‑saving measures in emergencies.
  • Refer patients to appropriate specialists for complex cases requiring advanced care.
  • Maintain detailed and accurate medical records, sharing assessments and plans with the healthcare team and families as needed.
  • Educate patients and the community on health maintenance and preventive care strategies.
  • Stay updated on best practices and advancements in healthcare through continued education and professional development.
  • Demonstrate knowledge of infection control guidelines and ensure patient and environmental safety.
  • Collaborate effectively with healthcare team members, fostering a team‑based approach to patient care.
Professional Requirements
  • Current and active Virginia Nurse Practitioner license.
  • Proficiency in diagnosing and treating conditions, including infectious diseases, for all ages.
  • Excellent communication skills and cultural sensitivity.
  • Current BLS certification is required. Willing to provide training if certification is not currently held.
Work Environment
  • Primarily indoors with occasional exposure to biological, mechanical, or chemical hazards.
  • Regular use of personal protective equipment as needed.
  • Physical demands include standing, walking, and lifting up to 50 pounds.
