Job summary

The ideal candidate has a RN background with 6+ years of experience, paralegal certification preferred, and strong command of medical terminology, HIPAA, and legal documentation. Excellent communication skills are essential.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in nursing is required; paralegal certification preferred.
  • 6+ years as a registered nurse; 2+ years of law firm consultant/paralegal experience preferred.
  • Proficient understanding of medical terminology and HIPAA compliance; strong editing and proofreading skills.
  • Excellent written and oral communication; ability to interact with court personnel, attorneys, clients and vendors.

Responsibilities

  • Request, analyze, and summarize medical records for clients, attorneys, and experts.
  • Conduct medical journal research via Internet or libraries.
  • Abstract medical records and prepare outlines and narrative summaries.
  • Analyze medical records and billings to evaluate medical evidence; prepare case analysis.
  • Coordinate medical expert deposition preparation and identify relevant experts.
  • Prepare documents and chronologies for hearings or trials; draft memos and reports.
  • Perform preliminary legal research as needed; assist with other duties as assigned.

Job description

Quintairos, Prieto, Wood & Boyer, P.A. has an amazing opportunity for a full-time Nurse Paralegal to join a rock star litigation team in the Memphis, TN office.

The individual in this role primarily supports attorneys with a busy defense litigation practice with an emphasis on medical negligence and malpractice. This is a hands-on position that involves working collaboratively with clients and employees of the firm.

PRIMARY DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Support the legal team by requesting, analyzing, and summarizing medical records for clients, attorneys, and experts.
  • Conduct medical journal research via the Internet or through local libraries.
  • Abstract medical records, organize and prepare both outline and narrative summaries of the records for internal use and for presentation to the client.
  • Analyze medical records and billings to evaluate the strengths and weaknesses of the medical evidence, including pre-existing or co-existing medical conditions. Prepare case analysis. Identify issues, omissions, and discrepancies.
  • Identify and provide information regarding medical experts and physicians; coordinate medical expert deposition preparation.
  • Assist attorneys with medical evidence preparation and organization for a hearing or trial.
  • Compose and type document production, including case analysis memoranda for attorneys, outline and narrative summaries, and chronologies of medical records, correspondence, and reports.
  • Compile data for exhibits.
  • Conduct preliminary legal research as necessary
  • Other job-related duties as assigned
REQUIREMENTS
  • Bachelor’s degree in nursing required. Paralegal Certification preferred.
  • 6+ years as a registered nurse. 2+ years of law firm consultant/paralegal experience preferred.
  • Proficient understanding and utilization of medical terminology, anatomical drawings, laboratory tests, and medications. Possess a thorough understanding of medical conditions to explain or illustrate a diagnosis.Proficient proofreading, redlining, and editing of documents. Must ensure accuracy, comprehension, and overall grammar and punctuation.
  • Has a full understanding of HIPAA compliance. Understands and complies with all other related regulatory mandates.
  • Research, analytical, organizational, and critical thinking skills are required.
  • Proficiency in MS Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Outlook, and knowledge and application of legal research tools (Westlaw).
  • Superior written and oral communication skills; excellent interpersonal skills to communicate with court personnel, attorneys and their staff, clients, witnesses, and outside vendors.

Physical Demands

This position is considered to be mostly sedentary and will require the employee to sit for extended periods of time. They will be engaged in using office equipment and computers. They may engage in lifting of supplies and materials up to 20 pounds from time to time. While performing duties of this position, the employee is regularly required to see, talk, and hear.

This job is located primarily in an indoor office environment with varying noise levels. There may be varying degrees of temperature. The employee may be interrupted from time to time.
