Job summary

WVU Medicine in Charleston, West Virginia is looking for a Registered Nurse with clinical experience to assist in legal cases related to medical negligence. Responsibilities include assessing risk management, preparing documents, reviewing medical records, and acting as a liaison between clinical staff and outside counsel.

The ideal candidate will have a Registered Nurse license and at least four years of clinical experience, along with strong communication skills for effective teamwork in a fast-paced environment.

Qualifications

Responsibilities

  • Assist in assessing risk management and internal control weaknesses.
  • Prepare and track documents for external experts and internal departments.
  • Review medical record documentation for accuracy and standards of care.
  • Organize and index internal medical records.
  • Perform medical literature research.
  • Collect documents for discovery requests.
  • Research relevant policies and regulations.
  • Interview hospital employees and other potential witnesses.
  • Assist outside counsel with discovery and witness coordination.
  • Prepare exhibits for mediation and trials.
  • Attend depositions, hearings, and trials as needed.

Skills

Job Overview

Examine and analyze medical records associated with asserted and potential malpractice claims to determine compliance with internal policies, procedures, and the standard of care. Assist litigation counsel with preparation and presentation of defenses in asserted medical negligence claims and other healthcare related matters.

Minimum Qualifications
  • Current Registered Nurse license issued by the state in which services will be provided, or a current multi‑state Registered Nurse license through the enhanced Nurse Licensure Compact (eNLC).
Experience
  • Four (4) years of clinical experience.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Bachelor of Science in Nursing.
Core Duties and Responsibilities
  • Assist in assessing risk management and internal control weaknesses; prepare and participate in risk management education for clinical staff.
  • Prepare and track documents to be sent to and received from external experts and internal departments.
  • Review medical record documentation for accuracy, completeness, and standards of care.
  • Organize and index internal medical records and medical records received from outside facilities and health care providers; prepare detailed chronologies for use by litigation attorneys during case preparation.
  • Perform medical literature research to assist in identifying standard of care and subject matter experts.
  • Collect documents and other information necessary to respond to discovery requests.
  • Research policies, including legacy policies, federal and state regulations to determine appropriate processes and procedures relevant to the time frame of care at issue.
  • Interview hospital employees and other potential witnesses and prepare detailed reports.
  • Supplement and maintain up‑to‑date information in the legal services department’s expert witness database.
  • Interact with and assist outside counsel with discovery, coordination of witness interviews and depositions, site visits and other tasks as requested.
  • Assist in preparation of exhibits for use at mediation, hearings and trial.
  • Attend depositions, hearings and trials as requested by litigation counsel.
  • Serve as liaison between clinical staff and outside counsel, attorneys issuing subpoenas and investigators as necessary.
  • Perform other tasks as requested or assigned by the Associate Litigation Counsel or AVP/Senior Litigation Counsel.
Physical Requirements
  • Ability to concentrate and sit at a desk for long periods of time.
  • Ability to work in a fast‑paced environment, including live hearings.
  • Visual requirements: Near vision, depth perception, extensive exposure to video displays.
  • Ability to hear normal conversation and telephone communications.
  • Occasional lifting, carrying, pushing and/or pulling up to 25 lbs.
Working Environment
  • General office environment.
