DMC Sinai-Grace Hospital is DMC’s largest hospital, offering a comprehensive heart center, cancer care, gerontology, emergency medicine, obstetrics/gynecology, and cosmetic services. Sinai-Grace’s joint replacement program features minimally invasive knee and hip replacement surgeries that attract patients nationwide. Sinai-Grace operates over 21 outpatient care sites and ambulatory surgery centers across Wayne and Oakland Counties and is one of 10 hospitals nationally to receive a Robert Wood Johnson Foundation grant to set standards in cardiac care.

Summary Description

Reports to the Director of Nurse-Midwifery Services and provides prenatal, intrapartum, postpartal, and well-women gynecology care to nurse-midwifery patients attending clinics and labor and delivery at Hutzel Hospital.

  1. Performs nurse-midwifery duties on a 24-hour basis, including prenatal and postnatal visits, family planning/GYN, attending patients in labor and at delivery, consulting with physicians, and making rounds to nurse-midwifery patients.
  2. Assists in planning, developing, evaluating, and revising services provided by the nurse-midwifery department.
  3. Delegates healthcare measures to appropriate health professionals and workers such as staff nurses, residents, and students.
  4. Functions as part of an interdisciplinary team to develop healthcare approaches that meet family needs, involving physicians, social workers, dieticians, and nursing staff.
  5. Consults with supervisors, physicians, and nursing staff regarding maternity care.
  6. Participates in planning, implementing, and evaluating educational programs for families, staff, and community groups interested in family-centered maternity education.
  7. Plans care and family planning concepts tailored to each client's needs.
  8. Participates in clinical research to improve service quality for childbearing families.
  9. Maintains current knowledge of trends and issues in women's and infants' healthcare through seminars, meetings, and conferences.
  10. Promotes nurse-midwifery philosophy among staff, clients, and community via publications, speaking engagements, and committees.
  11. Educates medical, nursing, and midwifery students on the normal labor and birth process within healthy family settings.
  12. Collaborates with nursing and OB/GYN departments to promote nurse-midwifery and family-centered maternity care.
Qualifications
  1. Certification from the American College of Midwives.
  2. Masters degree in Maternal Child Nursing, Public Health, or related field preferred.
  3. Licensed Registered Nurse and Nurse Midwife in Michigan.
  4. One to two years of midwifery or related clinical experience with a focus on family-centered care is highly desired.
