Position Summary
Under the direction of the Director of Nursing, coordinates and supervises personnel providing care to patients and all components of the treatment program. This position assumes a twenty-four hour responsibility.
Major Duties and Responsibilities
- Organizes, directs, and controls staffing schedules, daily assignments, acuity reports, and the safe and efficient use of resources. Assigns duties based on staff competency and patient acuity. Allocates resources and monitors expenses. Participates in budget development under the guidance of hospital administration.
- Provides direct nursing care in conformance with accepted standards of nursing practice. Provides guidance, training, and monitoring of Master Treatment Plan development and updates.
- Uses clear and concise written and verbal communication skills. Completes routine and unexpected job assignments within the agreed timeframe. Facilitates communication between unit, department, and hospital staff.
- Assists in evaluating, monitoring, and developing quality patient care activity schedules. Encourages family involvement. Attends Program Evaluation Meetings and participates in Nursing Leadership, Performance Improvement, and other hospital committees as needed. Coordinates care delivery with hospital departments. Engages actively in the development of quality treatment.
- Participates in developing and maintaining unit, departmental, and hospital standards of excellence through problem solving, employee evaluations, disciplinary actions, committee involvement, and self-growth. Participates in the hospital's Service Excellence Program.
- Reviews and/or completes incident reports, Infection Control Reports, Patient Advocate Reports, Sentinel Events, and employee Performance Appraisals to assess quality. Maintains patient rights and hospital policies. Ensures proper signing of patient/family forms. Provides educational offerings and organizes orientations. Ensures staff have necessary resources for quality care. Participates in policy and procedure development and review.
- Works with Admission & Registration staff to ensure a timely admission process.
- Assumes the responsibilities of the Director of Nursing effectively in their absence. Accepts additional responsibilities as assigned by the Director of Nursing.
- Adheres to all safety policies and safe work practices. Attends hospital safety training sessions. Reviews safety policies annually to ensure compliance with regulatory agencies and hospital standards. Reviews injury data and implements corrective actions to reduce accidents. Sets and reviews safety goals periodically.
- Reviews and maintains updated job descriptions, performance evaluations, orientation checklists, and competencies annually.
- Reports all accidents immediately and implements effective corrective actions.
- Ensures departmental adherence to safe work practices.
