Job summary

Inova invites nursing students to apply for the Nurse Extern - 2027 Summer Program. This 8-week, full-time externship offers hands-on clinical exposure, with the first week devoted to orientation.

Positions are available across Inova facilities in the DC metro area, with day and evening shifts to support patient care needs. Applicants must be currently enrolled in an accredited nursing program, have completed at least one acute care rotation, and hold BLS certification by start.

Qualifications

• Currently enrolled nursing student with minimum Grade Point Average of 3.0
• Successful completion of one acute care (med-surg) clinical rotation
• BLS for Healthcare Provider certification required upon start

Responsibilities

• Collaborates with the RN on the plan of care for patient assignments and provides basic nursing care under supervision
• Assists with patient flow and unit outcomes through effective communication and teamwork
• Collects basic monitoring data, observes patient changes, and reports to the RN
• Maintains patient safety, privacy, and confidentiality
• Completes extern training, skill competency checklist, and simulation labs
• Performs other duties as assigned

Inova is accepting applications for our Nurse Extern - 2027 Summer Program.

Start dates: May 17, May 24, June 7, and June 14

Nurse Externs - Summer Nurse Externship is 8 weeks; Full Time hours (typically 3 - 12 hour shifts per week)

The first week (5 days) is mandatory training and orientation (daytime hours).

***Applicants must be currently enrolled in a nursing degree program and have successfully completed at least one acute care clinical rotation***

Nurse Extern Job Responsibilities

• Collaborates with the Registered Nurse (RN) on the plan of care for patient assignments. Provides basic nursing care which is deemed competent under the direction and supervision of the RN. Assists with treatments and procedures under the direction and supervision of the RN.
• Assists with unit needs to improve patient flow and unit outcomes through effective communication and collaboration and while working with the team to achieve maximum productivity.
• Assists RN and other members of the healthcare team in gathering basic monitoring data and specimen collection. Observes and reports any patient symptoms and/or change in patient conditions to the appropriate RN.
• Evaluates and maintains the environment to promote patient and healthcare team safety.
• Documents all patient care activities on assigned patients in accordance with documentation standards.
• Maintains patient privacy and confidentiality at all times.
• Attends simulation exercises as assigned.
• Completes extern training, skill competency checklist and simulation labs.
• Performs other duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications:

• Education (official transcript required): Currently enrolled nursing student with minimum Grade Point Average of 3.0
• Other: Successful completion of one acute care (med-surg) clinical rotation, one faculty letter of recommendation
• Licensure/ Certification: Basic Life Support (BLS) for Healthcare Provider certification from the American Heart Association required upon start
