Job summary

Inova is accepting applications for the Nurse Extern – 2027 Summer Program. This 8-week externship offers hands-on nursing experiences across Inova facilities in Northern Virginia with start dates on May 17, May 24, June 7, and June 14.

Applicants must be enrolled in a nursing degree program, have completed at least one acute care clinical rotation, and hold BLS certification. Shifts vary (day, mid, night) with 3–12 hour options per week.

Qualifications

• Currently enrolled nursing student with minimum GPA 3.0.
• Successful completion of one acute care (med-surg) clinical rotation.
• BLS for Healthcare Provider certification from the American Heart Association required on start.

Responsibilities

• Collaborates with the RN on patient plans of care and provides basic nursing care under supervision.
• Assists with treatments and procedures as directed by the RN.
• Contributes to patient flow and unit outcomes through teamwork and communication.
• Gathers basic monitoring data and specimen collection under supervision; reports changes to the RN.
• Maintains patient safety, privacy, and confidentiality.
• Attends simulations and completes extern training, competency checklists, and labs.

Nurse Externs - Summer Nurse Externship is 8 weeks; Full Time hours (typically 3 - 12 hour shifts per week)

The first week (5 days) is mandatory training and orientation (daytime hours).

***Applicants must be currently enrolled in a nursing degree program and have successfully completed at least one acute care clinical rotation***

Nurse Extern Job Responsibilities

• Collaborates with the Registered Nurse (RN) on the plan of care for patient assignments. Provides basic nursing care which is deemed competent under the direction and supervision of the RN. Assists with treatments and procedures under the direction and supervision of the RN.
• Assists with unit needs to improve patient flow and unit outcomes through effective communication and collaboration and while working with the team to achieve maximum productivity.
• Assists RN and other members of the healthcare team in gathering basic monitoring data and specimen collection. Observes and reports any patient symptoms and/or change in patient conditions to the appropriate RN.
• Evaluates and maintains the environment to promote patient and healthcare team safety.
• Documents all patient care activities on assigned patients in accordance with documentation standards.
• Maintains patient privacy and confidentiality at all times.
• Attends simulation exercises as assigned.
• Completes extern training, skill competency checklist and simulation labs.

• Performs other duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications:

• Education (official transcript required): Currently enrolled nursing student with minimum Grade Point Average of 3.0
• Other: Successful completion of one acute care (med-surg) clinical rotation, one faculty letter of recommendation

• Licensure/ Certification: Basic Life Support (BLS) for Healthcare Provider certification from the American Heart Association required upon start
