Job summary

Inova Health is accepting applications for the Nurse Extern - 2027 Summer Program. This eight‑week externship offers hands‑on nursing experience and orientation with a schedule of full‑time hours across day, mid, and night shifts. Start dates include May 17, May 24, June 7, and June 14, with a mandatory first week of training.

Applicants must be currently enrolled in a nursing degree program and have completed at least one acute care clinical rotation. BLS certification is required at start.

Qualifications

• Currently enrolled nursing student with minimum GPA of 3.0.
• One acute care (med-surg) clinical rotation completed.
• BLS for Healthcare Provider certification required upon start.

Responsibilities

• Collaborates with RN on plan of care and provides basic nursing care under supervision.
• Assists with unit needs, communicates to improve patient flow and productivity.
• Gathers basic monitoring data and specimens; reports changes to the RN.
• Maintains a safe environment and documents care activities per standards.
• Maintains patient privacy and participates in simulation exercises.
• Completes extern training, competency checklists, and labs.
• Performs other duties as assigned.

Nurse Externs - Summer Nurse Externship is 8 weeks; Full Time hours (typically 3 - 12 hour shifts per week)

The first week (5 days) is mandatory training and orientation (daytime hours).

***Applicants must be currently enrolled in a nursing degree program and have successfully completed at least one acute care clinical rotation***

Nurse Extern Job Responsibilities

• Collaborates with the Registered Nurse (RN) on the plan of care for patient assignments. Provides basic nursing care which is deemed competent under the direction and supervision of the RN. Assists with treatments and procedures under the direction and supervision of the RN.
• Assists with unit needs to improve patient flow and unit outcomes through effective communication and collaboration and while working with the team to achieve maximum productivity.
• Assists RN and other members of the healthcare team in gathering basic monitoring data and specimen collection. Observes and reports any patient symptoms and/or change in patient conditions to the appropriate RN.
• Evaluates and maintains the environment to promote patient and healthcare team safety.
• Documents all patient care activities on assigned patients in accordance with documentation standards.
• Maintains patient privacy and confidentiality at all times.
• Attends simulation exercises as assigned.
• Completes extern training, skill competency checklist and simulation labs.
• Performs other duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications:

• Education (official transcript required): Currently enrolled nursing student with minimum Grade Point Average of 3.0
• Other: Successful completion of one acute care (med-surg) clinical rotation, one faculty letter of recommendation
• Licensure/ Certification: Basic Life Support (BLS) for Healthcare Provider certification from the American Heart Association required upon start
