Job summary

Henrico Doctors Hospital is seeking a Nurse Extern PRN to gain hands-on experience within the Cardio Renal Pulmonary tracks. You will support the nursing team, learn through direct patient care, and develop skills toward more advanced responsibilities as you progress in your RN program.

You will work under supervision, perform essential nursing tasks, document care, and participate in ongoing professional growth opportunities while contributing to safe, compassionate patient care.

Qualifications

• BLS must be obtained within 30 days of employment start date.
• Associate degree or bachelor’s degree in nursing.
• Currently enrolled in an RN program with nursing fundamentals completed.

Responsibilities

• Provide essential care for patients by assisting with ADLs, checking vital signs, and supporting mobility and comfort.
• Perform foundational nursing tasks as you gain experience and develop skills.
• Document care accurately and communicate updates with the nursing team.
• Explain care plans to patients and families and offer guidance for recovery.
• Maintain clean, safe patient areas and follow infection prevention practices.

Job Summary and Qualifications

As a Nurse Extern, you’ll be a valued part of the nursing team, gaining hands‑on experience as you explore the full scope of the Registered Nurse role. You’ll help deliver safe, compassionate care that improves patients’ lives while building the skills and confidence to take on more advanced responsibilities as you progress through your nursing program.

Your responsibilities will include:

• Providing essential care for patients by helping with ADLs (Activities of Daily Living), checking vital signs, supporting mobility, and ensuring comfort and hygiene
• Performing nursing tasks like wound care, catheter care, collecting specimens, and other basic procedures as you gain experience and grow in your competency
• Documenting care accurately and communicating timely updates with the nursing team to keep patient care seamless and coordinated
• Helping patients and families understand their care plans and offering guidance for their health and recovery
• Keeping patient areas clean and safe by following infection prevention practices, managing equipment, and maintaining an organized environment
• Championing your growth and enhancing patient care by engaging in learning opportunities, sharing ideas to improve care, and partnering with your supervisor or preceptor to build your personal career development plan

What qualifications you will need:

• Basic Cardiac Life Support must be obtained within 30 days of employment start date
• Associate Degree, or Bachelors Degree
• Must be currently enrolled in and RN program with completed nursing fundamentals.
