Job summary

St. Davids South Austin Medical Center, part of HCA Healthcare, invites nursing students to join as a Nurse Extern PRN.

You will support the nursing team, gain hands-on experience, and explore the Registered Nurse role while delivering compassionate care within a busy hospital environment. You will assist with ADLs, vital signs, wounds and basic procedures, and you’ll document care and communicate updates to the team.

Qualifications

• Currently enrolled in an accredited nursing program (RN or LVN).
• BLS certification from AHA or Red Cross within 30 days of start date.
• Minimum two 12-hour shifts per month.

Responsibilities

• Providing essential care for patients by helping with ADLs, checking vital signs, supporting mobility, and ensuring comfort and hygiene.
• Performing nursing tasks like wound care, catheter care, collecting specimens, and other basic procedures as you gain experience.
• Documenting care accurately and communicating timely updates with the nursing team to keep patient care seamless and coordinated.
• Helping patients and families understand their care plans and offering guidance for their health and recovery.
• Keeping patient areas clean and safe by following infection prevention practices, managing equipment, and maintaining an organized environment.
• Championing your growth and enhancing patient care by engaging in learning opportunities, sharing ideas to improve care, and partnering with your supervisor or preceptor to build your personal career development plan.

Job Summary

Your responsibilities will include:

• Performing nursing tasks like wound care, catheter care, collecting specimens, and other basic procedures as you gain experience and grow in your competency
• Documenting care accurately and communicating timely updates with the nursing team to keep patient care seamless and coordinated
• Helping patients and families understand their care plans and offering guidance for their health and recovery

Job Qualifications and Requirements

• Currently enrolled and in good standing in an accredited school of nursing for a Registered Nurse degree or LVN degree
• Current BLS (Basic Life Support) certification from the American Heart Association or American Red Cross within 30 days of employment start date
• Minimum requirement of two 12-hour shifts per month
