The Summer Nurse Externship is a 10-week program designed for nursing students entering their final year. The program begins with a two-week orientation including both classroom and clinical components, in which the nurse extern performs basic bedside care and selected nursing procedures. The Nurse Extern is assigned to a Registered Nurse throughout the Externship to perform basic bedside care and selected nursing procedures. Nurse Externs partner with an RN to learn and demonstrate physical assessment skills, and learn and demonstrate routine basic care skills (bathing, safety, and hygiene activities). This is for a nursing student entering their final year of an accredited nursing program.

The only Level IV neonatal intensive care unit in central Pennsylvania, the unit, which incorporates 56 hybrid beds, offers critical care for high‑risk deliveries and premature infants. Nurses care for patients requiring different modes of ventilation support including the use of high-frequency ventilation, extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO), bubble CPAP, noninvasive support and nitric oxide therapy.
