Job summary

Penn State Health’s Hershey Medical Center invites nursing students in their final year to join a Summer Nurse Externship in the Medical Intensive Care Unit. The 10-week program begins with orientation and pairs externs with an RN to perform basic bedside care and selected procedures.

Participants gain hands-on experience in assessment and routine care, preparing for entry into professional nursing roles within a Magnet-designated academic medical center environment.

Qualifications

• Nursing student in final year of an accredited Nursing Program and one clinical rotation, or a Graduate Nurse without Boards required.

Responsibilities

• Perform basic bedside care under supervision and assist with selected nursing procedures.
• Learn and demonstrate physical assessment skills.
• Partner with an RN to support patient care in the 24-bed ICU unit.

The Summer Nurse Externship is a 10-week program designed for nursing students entering their final year. The program begins with a two-week orientation including both classroom and clinical components, in which the nurse extern performs basic bedside care and selected nursing procedures. The Nurse Extern is assigned to a Registered Nurse throughout the Externship to perform basic bedside care and selected nursing procedures. Nurse Externs partner with an RN to learn and demonstrate physical assessment skills, and learn and demonstrate routine basic care skills (bathing, safety, and hygiene activities). This is for a nursing student entering their final year of an accredited nursing program.

The 24-bed intensive care unit is designed for patients receiving critical treatment for multi-system organ failure, acute respiratory distress syndrome, sepsis, gastrointestinal hemorrhage, acute renal/liver failure, acid-base and electrolyte imbalances, diabetes mellitus, substance use disorder and post-cardiac arrest hypothermia.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

• Nursing student in final year of an accredited Nursing Program and one clinical rotation, or a Graduate Nurse without Boards required.
