General Summary of Position
Provides professional nursing care for clinic patients following established standards and practices. Monitors quality and safety issues. Functions in a nursing work and clinical skills mentoring capacity to medical assistant staff.
Primary Duties and Responsibilities
- Contributes to the achievement of department goals, adheres to policies, procedures, quality, and safety standards; complies with regulations.
- Performs nursing care, administers medications, vaccines, treatments, observes and reports patient conditions, and ensures accurate documentation.
- Develops schedules, manages shift changes, and serves as the point of contact for clinic personnel.
- Participates in quality improvement initiatives, assists with regulatory compliance, and performs mock surveys.
- Handles patient telephone triage, assesses needs, and coordinates care with staff.
- Educates and counsels patients and families on procedures, medications, and health maintenance; maintains patient records.
- Provides postoperative instructions and contributes to clinic objectives and quality assurance programs.
- Orders and evaluates diagnostic studies, interprets data, and determines therapeutic plans.
- Maintains departmental policies, attends meetings, and supports continuing education for staff.
- Ensures staff training and adherence to policies, including electronic health record documentation.
- Monitors patient progress, manages referrals, and coaches patients on treatment adherence.
- Screens for entitlement programs and manages prescription refill functions.
- Participates in multidisciplinary team meetings, community outreach, and quality improvement teams.
Minimum Qualifications
Education
- Associate's degree from an accredited Nursing School required.
- Bachelor's degree in Nursing (BSN) preferred.
- One year of relevant education may substitute for one year of work experience.
Experience
- 1-2 years of professional nursing experience required, with strong organizational skills.
- 1-2 years of office management/administrative experience preferred; outpatient experience is a plus.
- One year of relevant work experience may substitute for one year of education.
Licenses and Certifications
- RN license in DC, MD, VA, or applicable jurisdiction required.
- CPR certification from AHA or Red Cross required within 90 days of hire.
- Additional certifications may vary by department.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
- Knowledge of nursing theory and practice, medical equipment, and patient care techniques.
- Skill in applying nursing principles, establishing effective relationships, and reacting calmly in emergencies.
