Job summary

Heart Math Tutoring in Charlotte, NC seeks a Number Concepts Tutor to deliver high-quality, in-person math instruction to K–5 students during the school day, using Heart’s intervention curriculum.

Part-time position (roughly 10–14 hours per week during school hours or 18–20 hours at full-site) with opportunities to assess student progress, collaborate with teachers, and support a growing program serving 1,400+ students across 33 schools in the region.

Qualifications

HMT gives young students successful experiences in math through individualized tutoring during the school day. To date, 97% of Heart students have shown growth on pre/post assessments that meet goals set by elementary math specialists at the University of North Carolina at Charlotte and Charlotte‑Mecklenburg Schools, and 90% of teachers annually report that student confidence increases because of the program. About the Role: Number Concepts Tutor

The Number Concepts Tutor is a part‑time position that leads small group math sessions where they will deliver high‑quality, in‑person instruction to help students build foundational math skills and confidence using HMT’s intervention curriculum adapted from Kathy Richard’s Developing Number Concepts. Tutors will work directly with elementary students during the school day, using structured lessons and hands‑on materials provided by Heart. In addition to delivering instruction, tutors will assess student progress and help create a positive and supportive learning environment. This role is ideal for someone who enjoys working with children, believes all children deserve equal educational opportunities, and is excited to make a direct impact through small group tutoring. Tutors will collaborate with school staff and Heart Math Tutoring team members to ensure students are receiving the help they need to succeed.

Job Responsibilities

Key responsibilities are listed below.

  • Lead tutoring for ~12‑25 students in grades K through 5 in either small group or 1:1 format
  • Oversee 50 – 60 students’ growth in math skills and enthusiasm for academics;
  • Liaise with teachers, school staff, and families.
Tasks

tasks will include but are not limited to:

  • Become an expert on Heart curriculum and assessments;
  • Perform tutoring of K‑5 students 1:1 or in small groups using Heart curriculum;
  • Communicate with school staff regarding curriculum, students, and schedule issues;
  • Communicate with families regarding student and program updates;
  • Design and maintain schedule of students using Salesforce;
  • Coordinate and complete student assessments;
  • Monitor student progress and use this data to support students;
  • Manage tutoring materials;
  • Attend team meetings and quarterly professional development trainings;
  • Report various operational information to Program Manager;
  • Partner with Heart team in providing and receiving feedback, with the goal of aiding the organization’s efforts to establish a strong, scalable program model.
Number Concept Tutors will also be asked to play a supporting role in
  • Coordination of space and time logistics with school staff; and
  • Act as an ambassador of Heart to personal networks, the Charlotte community, and school site.
Typical Work Week

Depending on the school assignment, a tutor may work ~10-14 hours a week (half‑site) or ~18-20 hours a week (full‑site) within a school day schedule from August to May. In all, approximately 70% of a tutor’s time is designated for tutoring at your school site, and 30% of time is spent on check‑ins, communications, and computer work.
