Idaho National Laboratory is hiring a Nuclear Remote System Engineer to work in our Fuels PIE Instrument & Data Science Engineering Department. Our team works a 4x10 schedule located out of our MFC facility with every Friday off. You will report to a senior manager

The Nuclear Remote System Engineer uses engineering fundamentals to perform work in a remotely operated hot cell environment for Post Irradiation Examination (PIE) on highly irradiated nuclear reactor fuels. Integrated with Engineering, Research, and Operations, the Nuclear Remote Systems Engineer is a gatekeeper for in-cell remote applications, balancing the engineering process with the needs of researchers and the conduct of operations.

Responsibilities Include

  • Provide imaginative and practical engineering solutions to research related programmatic challenges where highly specialized equipment solutions are required to be designed, operated, and maintained (typically one-of-kind design) in a remote hot-cell environment.
  • Collect, assimilate, interpret, and report technical data generated from assigned process instrumentation, equipment, and systems to meet programmatic research goals.
  • Maintain documentation and operational procedures of assigned process instrumentation, equipment, and systems. Write, review, and revise PIE documentation, procedures, and engineering drawings.
  • Maintain configuration management of assigned systems and use the Engineering Change (EC) process when making repairs, modifications, or upgrades.
  • Modify existing process instrumentation/systems to support new missions.
  • Troubleshoot in-cell electromechanical instrumentation, equipment, and systems
  • This posting closes:
  • Modify commercially available equipment for remote applications. Install and qualify (Mockup) of new PIE equipment and instrumentation.
  • Be the technical interface for assigned systems between nuclear facility operations, principal investigators, project managers and DOE programs. Work with research personnel to establish experiment specific requirements for remote process instrumentation and quality assurance.

*Minimum Requirements: *

  • Level 3: Bachelor of Science in Engineering; Mechanical, Nuclear, Materials Science, or other related field and 5 years of experience. Master’s and 2 years of experience. PhD and 2 years experience.
  • Level 4: Bachelor of Science in Engineering; Mechanical, Nuclear, Materials Science, or other related field and 9 years of experience. Master’s and 6 years of experience. PhD and 4 years experience.
  • This position requires the ability to obtain and maintain a Department of Energy "L" clearance, which requires US Citizenship.

The Ideal Candidate Will Possess

  • Electromechanical experience operating, maintaining, and troubleshooting instrumentation and equipment.
  • Experience with Microscopes, both optical and digital, sample preparation, microhardness testing, and digital image processing.
  • Remote Engineering/Operations Hot Cell Experience.
  • Skills with data collection and interpretation, technical writing, and team collaboration

  • The pay range for this position is: Level 3 ($93,204 - $191,076) / Level 4 ($111,888 - $229,284). At Idaho National Laboratory compensation decisions are determined using factors such as education, relevant experience, and other credentials. ((Multi-level postings))
  • TDP: This is a testing designated position; you will be required to submit to a pre-employment drug screen and periodic drug testing throughout the term of your employment.
  • Multi-Level: This is a multi-level posting and you will be placed at the appropriate level dependent on depth and breadth of proven experience and skills.

Physical Requirements

While performing the duties of this classification, the employee is frequently required to stand, walk, sit, stoop, kneel, bend, and work in an office and field/laboratory environment. The job requires hand/finger dexterity to keyboard or type, handle materials, manipulate tools, and reach with hands and arms. The job requires operation of job-related equipment and driving a vehicle. The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 35 pounds without assistance. Sufficient visual acuity and hearing capacity to perform the essential functions and interact with the public is required.
