UT-Battelle at Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL) seeks an Advanced Nuclear Reactor and Fuel Cycle Engineer (Staff) to lead modeling and simulation efforts for lattice physics, reactor cores, spent fuel, and fuel cycle applications using SCALE and VERA. You will collaborate with industry and national labs to advance next-gen nuclear reactors.

The role requires a PhD with 2–5 years post-PhD experience, strong publication record, and proficiency in Python/C/C++ and nuclear simulation tools.

Qualifications

• PhD in nuclear engineering or closely related field with 2–5 years of post-PhD experience.
• Knowledge of nuclear reactor analysis R&D demonstrated through research and publications.
• Experience using SCALE, VERA, MCNP, Serpent, OpenMC, and/or MOOSE; familiarity with reactor systems.
• Programming/scripting experience in C/C++, Python, Fortran, Git, and CMake.
• Demonstrated writing and communication skills and ability to publish.

Responsibilities

• Design, develop, optimize and analyze reactor models using SCALE, VERA, OpenMC, MCNP, Serpent, and MOOSE to support next-gen reactor design.
• Develop and analyze fuel cycle models using Cyclus to evaluate advanced fuel cycle strategies.
• Interact with staff scientists and engineers and represent ORNL and research to sponsors.
• Conduct work on scope and budget.
• Communicate work via journal articles, presentations, reports, and code documentation.
• Mentor early career staff and participate in professional societies.
