Job summary

The Nuclear Medical Technologist at Trinity Health Ann Arbor performs diagnostic NM imaging and handles radiopharmaceuticals following ALARA principles. You will operate Hot Lab equipment and assist physicians with therapeutic radionuclide administration, with emphasis on patient safety and quality control.

Day shift with weekend/holiday rotation, 40 hours per week. On-call duties apply; location may include Livingston Hospital in Brighton as needed.

Qualifications

  • Completion of an accredited Nuclear Medicine Technologist program or an Associate in Applied Science degree.
  • Registration as Nuclear Medicine Technologist by NMTCB or ARRT.
  • Current Basic Life Support (BLS) certification.
  • One year NM experience preferred.
  • Knowledge of cross-sectional anatomy and quality control protocols.

Responsibilities

  • Receives patients and explains procedures, observing condition for additional information.
  • Calculates radionuclide activity and prepares radiopharmaceutical dosages.
  • Performs quality control to ensure medication quality and sterility.
  • Prepares imaging devices for studies and administers radiopharmaceuticals.
  • Performs NM imaging procedures including dynamic, static, and SPECT/CT.
  • Maintains ancillary equipment and monitors patient status per protocols.
  • Disposes of radioactive materials per policy and regulations.
  • Assists in inventory management and vendor service coordination.

Department: Nuclear Medicine

Primary Location: Trinity Health Ann Arbor Hospital (Ypsilanti, MI)

-could also be scheduled for some hours at Livingston Hospital in Brighton.

Position Purpose

The NM Technologistoperatesa variety of Hot Lab equipment, aswelldiagnosticNMimaging equipment,toobtain images oftheanatomyof interestfor interpretation by Radiologists, with attention to As LowAsReasonably Achievable (ALARA) concepts.The NM Technologist processes the images asrequiredper specific diagnostic protocols. The NM Technologist may alsoassistthe physician with theadministration of therapeutic radionuclides.

Shift Available: Day Shift, weekend and holiday rotation. On call until 10pm rotation.

Status Available: Full Time, 40 hours per week

Required Qualifications
  • Completion of an accredited Nuclear Medicine Technologist program, orAssociate in Applied Science degree
  • Registration as a Nuclear Medicine Technologists by the Nuclear Medicine Technology Certification Board (NMTCB) or the American Registry of Radiologic Technologists (ARRT)
  • Current Basic Life Support (BLS) certification
  • One year NM experience preferred
  • Must have good working knowledge of cross-sectional anatomy, be proficient in venipunctureand quality control proceduresand operation ofHot Laband NM imagingequipment.
What the Nuclear Medical Technologist will do
  • Receives patients and explains procedures prior to and throughout the exam. Observes patient condition foradditionalpertinent informationrelativeto the ordered test, suchas,coherence, ability tocomply withexam specifications, pregnancy, physical contraindications, physical status, etc.
  • Calculates radionuclideactivity to be administeredin accordance withprotocols for ordered procedures.Preparesappropriate dosageand volumeof radiopharmaceuticals.
  • Performs quality control procedures to ensure pharmaceutical quality of agents before administering to patients.Maintainssterilityand integrity of prepared radiopharmaceutical compounds.
  • Prepares imaging devices for studiesin accordance withprotocols for orderedexam.
  • Administers the dose of radiopharmaceuticals to patients undergoing Nuclear Medicine procedures; intravenously, orally or by inhalation.
  • Performs standard Nuclear Medicine dynamic,staticand/or SPECT and SEPCT-CTimaging procedures on patients, which include adjusting equipment to encompass the area of study.
  • Monitors andmaintainspatient’s ancillary equipment, suchas,supplemental oxygen and IV lines.
  • Observespatientfor change-in-status and follows prescribed protocols for intervention or notifiesappropriate staff, as needed.
  • Prepares specializedradiopharmaceuticalsforeitherin-vitro or in-vivolabellingmethod.Preparespatientbloodsamples for transport to outside vendors for radiolabeling.
  • Reports all excessive radiation exposure to the Authorized User, NM Manager, and Radiation Safety Officer.
  • Performs various tasks associated with receiving, processing,distributingand storing radioactive materials.
  • Receives and checks all radionuclide shipments for contamination according to radiation safety procedures and regulations.
  • Disposesof radioactive material and radioactive wastein accordance withdepartmental policy and state/federal regulation.
  • Assistsinmaintainingcurrent inventory of routine laboratory and medical supplies.Maintains supply of ventilation mouthpieces; cleans, packages, andtransportsto hospital sterilizationunit.
  • Performs quality control procedures on all instruments, including voltage and linearity checks and tests of uniformity and resolution, to ensure the proper working of equipment.
  • Performs minor routine preventative maintenance on specified instrumentation.Initiates vendor service calls for machine repair and downtime events.
