Job summary

Los Alamos National Laboratory seeks an Architectural Engineer to join the Plutonium Facilities Engineering Division. You will design, maintain, and upgrade architectural and structural systems at nuclear waste processing, storage and characterization facilities on the LANL campus while ensuring compliance with nuclear safety requirements.

You will develop design details, structural analyses, specifications, and inspections, and contribute to emergency egress and space planning to keep occupants

Qualifications

  • Knowledge of non-reactor facility structural engineering concepts and calculations.
  • Familiarity with BIM and space planning considerations.
  • Understanding of DOE and industry design standards is a plus.

You will be expected to develop design details, structural analysis calculations, specifications, and special inspections that incorporate applicable design requirements, including nuclear safety requirements, into new facility designs as well as modifications to existing facilities.Additionally, architectural aspects of facility design and modifications will require your input on aspects of emergency egress and space planning in order to keep the occupants safe and productive.### RequirementsWhat You NeedMinimum Job Requirements: Knowledge of new and existing non-reactor facility structural engineering systems and calculations, applications of engineering methods. Knowledge of computer-aided engineering tools such as 3D Building Information Modelling (BIM, specifically Autodesk Revit). Knowledge of engineering work, planning, construction, and control methods. Knowledge of engineering maintenance techniques and construction methodologies. Knowledge of basic architectural concepts of space planning, occupancy requirements, ergonomics.Additional Job Requirements for Nuclear Facilities Engineer 2:Knowledge of industry, regulatory, or national, and Department of Energy codes and standards including IBC, AISC 360, ACI 318, ASCE 7, and DOE-STD 1020. Knowledge of Engineering principles and procedures, design guides, appropriate standards, and administrative practices. Knowledge of project and process engineering practices. Advanced knowledge of and prior use of IBC, IEBC and NFPA 101.Training/Certifications:Professional Engineer (PE) license or Engineer-in-Training (EIT) certification with commitment to obtain PE is highly desirable. Professional Architect licensure may be beneficial depending on facility requirements.Education/Experience at lower level:Position requires a Bachelor's Degree in Engineering (Architectural Engineering is preferred) and a minimum of 2 years practical work experience to the degree necessary to perform the responsibilities outlined above. Candidates that meet the degree requirement, but who do not meet the two-year experience requirement, are encouraged to apply and may be considered for hire through an allowable variance.Education/Experience at higher level:Position requires a Bachelor's Degree in Engineering (Architectural Engineering is preferred) and a minimum of 3 years practical work experience to the degree necessary to perform the responsibilities outlined above.Desired Qualifications:Experience with safety-critical systems in regulated industries. Operations and maintenance environment experience. Facility modification and retrofit projects. Structural analysis experience in any of the following: SAP 2000, GT STRUDL, RISA, STAAD, or equal. Working experience Autodesk Revit or similar BIM software package. Knowledge of Building Systems Design processes (i.e. MEP, Control Systems, HVAC). Demonstrated knowledge of DOE standards applicable to structural design implementation. Familiarity with LANL engineering processes and procedures.Work Environment:Work in a noisy environment, work near sources of ionizing and non-ionizing radiation, work near machinery with moving parts, working overtime or an irregular schedule.Work Location:The work location for this position is onsite and located in Los Alamos, NM. All work locations are at the discretion of management.Work Schedule:This position may require 24/7 coverage, which could involve working a shift/weekend schedule. Employees maybe eligible for shift differential pay when assigned by their manager. Shift/weekend assignments are at the discretion of the manager. #ShiftWorkPosition Commitment:Regular appointment employees are required to serve a period of continuous service in their current position in order to be eligible to apply for posted jobs throughout the Laboratory.
