Job description

Lead Nuclear Materials & Metallurgy Engineer

Location: Milford, MA

Compensation
  • $150,000 – $200,000 + Bonus + Relocation Assistance + Full Benefits

A leading engineering organization supporting operating nuclear facilities is hiring a Lead Nuclear Materials & Metallurgy Engineer to take ownership of high-consequence engineering evaluations that directly impact plant safety, reliability, and long-term asset strategy.

This is not a general mechanical engineering role.

We are seeking a specialist whose expertise in metallurgy, materials behavior, and failure analysis is trusted when critical components show degradation and engineering decisions must be right the first time.

You will lead technical investigations, interpret laboratory data, and develop defensible engineering solutions across mid-size to large nuclear projects spanning AP1000, PWR, and BWR technologies.

Work Model

Primarily onsite during the first several months to build plant familiarity, develop internal relationships, and integrate with laboratory and engineering teams.

Transition to a hybrid schedule after approximately six months.

Senior engineers tend to prefer this approach — it enables stronger technical footing before adding flexibility.

What You’ll Own
  • Lead metallurgical investigations involving piping, pressure vessels, structural supports, and safety-related components
  • Determine degradation mechanisms including FAC, MIC, stress corrosion cracking, thermal fatigue, vibration fatigue, and corrosion-related damage
  • Translate materials testing and laboratory findings into clear engineering direction
  • Drive root cause failure analyses where technical defensibility is essential
  • Develop code-compliant repair strategies and design modifications aligned with ASME and nuclear regulatory standards
  • Evaluate component structural integrity and remaining service life
  • Partner directly with plant stakeholders, project leadership, and materials laboratories to resolve complex technical challenges

This is engineering work that influences operational decisions — not paperwork.

What Separates Strong Candidates From the Rest
  • Over 5 years Direct experience supporting operating nuclear power plants
  • Background in metallurgical evaluation, materials engineering, or failure analysis
  • Familiarity with AP1000, PWR, or BWR reactor systems
  • Hands‑on exposure to materials laboratories or testing environments
  • Strong command of ASME Boiler & Pressure Vessel Code
  • Proven leadership across mid-size to large engineering scopes
  • PE license strongly required or willing to get a PE within 6-12 months of employment.
Why Senior Engineers Pursue Roles Like This
  • Your technical judgment carries real weight
  • Complex problems that require expertise — not templates
  • Visible impact on plant performance and long-term reliability
  • Stable pipeline of nuclear engineering work
  • Compensation aligned with technical leadership
  • Relocation support available
  • Most importantly — your expertise is relied upon here.
Requirements

U.S. Citizenship or Permanent Residency required due to project work.

**Important: If your experience is primarily outside nuclear environments, this role will likely not be the right fit.**
