Job summary

Playing At Learning is seeking a relationship-driven Volunteer & Community Engagement Coordinator to oversee the volunteer program for Northern California FIRST Tech Challenge, including Youth Advisory Council and event support.

This part-time role (~15 hours/week) is hybrid, with in-person duties in San Jose as needed. You will recruit, coordinate, and recognize volunteers, ensure AB506 compliance, and collaborate with youth and coaches to grow our STEM programs.

• Attend events and tournaments as needed.

Job description

Playing At Learning is seeking a relationship-driven Volunteer & Community Engagement Coordinator to join our Playing At Learning team.

The Volunteer Coordinator will oversee the entire volunteer program for the Northern California FIRST Tech Challenge program including running our Youth Advisory Council. This position involves recruiting and supporting the team of volunteers we engage for our STEM focused youth competitions that occur across Northern California.

Location: Hybrid - Mostly remote (as needed - must be able to come into San Jose office as well as attend volunteer events and support of Playing At Learning events across Northern California)

Type: Part-Time Hours: Averaging about 15 hours per week which will vary throughout the year. Our busiest time is October to March to focus on event support and fewer hours for the remainder of the year to focus mainly on volunteer recruitment.

Salary: $18 to $20 per hour

Start Date: Immediately upon hire

Responsibilities:

• Oversee volunteer outreach and engagement
• Ensure that California law ( AB506 ) requirements for regular volunteers are met including creating processes and procedures to ensure compliance
• Maintain volunteer database and ensure that all FIRST volunteer requirements are met
• Serve as contact for existing and prospective volunteers for the FIRST Tech Challenge program
• Communicate with prospective and current volunteers via email or phone
• Plan and execute volunteer events and recognition
• Help assemble, organize and pack volunteer materials for tournaments as needed
• Attend and assist occasionally at official tournaments and events as needed
• Conduct postseason volunteer surveys and evaluation, providing recommendations for volunteer engagement improvements
• Manage Youth Advisory Council which serves to highlight outreach events and create programs that provide awareness of our programs as well as increase volunteers
• Perform other duties as needed

• Strong familiarity with email and Google tools including spreadsheets
• Willingness to work directly with youth and adult volunteers, parents, coaches and teams
• Interest in STEM (Science Technology Engineering Math) education for children
• Friendly, responsible, flexible, professional, and approachable
• FIRST program experience strongly preferred, but not required
• Assertive and self-directed
• Work effectively with a small team
• Must have the ability to interact with diverse groups of people
• Must have a reliable personal vehicle to attend meetings and events throughout Northern California as needed
• Must have a valid driver’s license and current car insurance
• Must be able to pass FIRST background screening requirements
• Must be at least 18 years old
• Must be U.S. Citizen or Permanent Resident Alien.
• Must have the legal right to work in the US without sponsorship
• Must have a High School diploma or GED
• Preferred: college degree, college coursework or equivalent work experience.
