Nonvisual Skills Instructor – Home Management – Phoenix Campus

Saavi Services for the Blind is seeking a dedicated and mission‑driven Nonvisual Skills Instructor – Home Management to support blind students in developing independence, confidence, and strong nonvisual skills for daily living. This role is ideal for an instructor who values high expectations, practical problem‑solving, strong organizational skills and empowering students to manage their homes and routines independently.

Through a strong partnership with the National Federation of the Blind (NFB), Saavi Services for the Blind delivers nationally recognized training grounded in Structured Discovery and a positive philosophy of blindness. All instructors contribute to a culture where students learn that challenges have solutions and independence is achievable.

Position Overview

Based in Phoenix, the Nonvisual Skills Instructor – Home Management provides instruction in independent living skills using Structured Discovery principles. Instruction occurs in individual and group settings and may take place in the training center, student apartments, and throughout the community.

Instructors must demonstrate personal competence in all skills taught and model authentic nonvisual techniques at all times. This role works collaboratively with the instructional team to ensure students successfully transfer skills to real‑world environments.

Key Responsibilities

  • Provide direct instruction in home management and daily living skills
  • Teach using Structured Discovery and approved NCRTB‑based methodologies
  • Foster confidence, independence, and nonvisual problem‑solving in all settings
  • Integrate braille, access technology, cane travel, and independent living skills into instruction
  • Provide instruction in kitchens, homes, and community environments (e.g., grocery and household shopping)
  • Teach use of common kitchen appliances, utensils, and home maintenance tools
  • Reinforce proper cane technique and nonvisual problem‑solving during all activities
  • Support development of age‑appropriate social skills through recreational and community activities
  • Assist students in traveling to and participating in community activities
  • Evaluate student skill levels and recommend appropriate rehabilitation and independent living equipment
  • Teach cooking, cleaning, budgeting, labeling, organization, and scheduling
  • Teach skills related to clothing care, household management, and shopping
  • Adapt curriculum for students with secondary disabilities and collaborate with PTs, OTs, and other specialists as needed
  • Use assistive technology that promotes independence in the home
  • Incorporate community resources to support student independence
  • Maintain written documentation, progress reports, and regular communication with the instructional team
  • Maintain a clean, safe, well‑stocked and organized instructional environment
  • Serve as a positive role model demonstrating strong nonvisual skills, respect, and inclusion

Qualifications

  • Certification from the National Blindness Professional Certification Board (NBPCB), or
  • Certification through ACVREP, or
  • Post‑secondary degree in Rehabilitation Teaching, Orientation & Mobility, Teacher of Blind/Visually Impaired, Counseling, Social Work, or related field, or
  • Three or more years’ experience providing skills training to blind individuals using Structured Discovery methodology
  • Willingness to work toward NCRTB apprenticeship upon employment
  • Demonstrated positive philosophy of blindness and inclusive practices
  • Strong communication, organization, emotional intelligence, and teamwork skills

Conditions of Employment

  • Ability to work some evenings and weekends as needed
  • Completion of SAAVI blindness immersion training
  • Ability to pass RSA background check and obtain DPS Fingerprint Clearance Card
  • Valid Arizona Driver’s License required if driving for SAAVI

Compensation & Professional Development

Salary Range: $45,000–$64,000 annually (based on experience)
