Job summary

LHH in Hackensack, NJ is seeking a Staff Accountant for a mission-driven nonprofit in Bergen County. You will own general ledger activities, account reconciliations, month-end close, financial reporting, grant accounting, and audit support under the Controller.

The ideal candidate has 2-5 years of progressive accounting experience, strong attention to detail, and the ability to work independently while managing multiple priorities in a collaborative nonprofit environment.

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree in Accounting or related field.
• 2+ years of accounting or finance experience, including reconciliations and month-end close.
• Experience with financial statement preparation and reporting.
• Working knowledge of payroll accounting.
• Knowledge of nonprofit and fund accounting principles preferred.
• Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
• Ability to work independently and manage multiple priorities.
• Proficiency with QuickBooks and Excel.

Responsibilities

• Prepare and review monthly general ledger, bank and cash reconciliations.
• Prepare and post journal entries and complete month-end close activities.
• Prepare payroll-related journal entries and reconcile payroll accounts.
• Perform revenue recognition and track deferred revenue.
• Assist with budgeting, forecasting, and variance analysis.
• Assist with monthly and annual financial statements and supporting schedules.
• Coordinate with external auditors; provide audit support and Form 990 tasks.
• Maintain and strengthen internal controls.
• Track grant expenditures and ensure grant compliance.
• Maintain accounting systems and identify process improvements.
• Protect confidential financial information and comply with policies.
• Support special accounting projects as assigned.
