Job summary

Houston Parks Board is seeking a Controller to oversee accounting staff, close processes, and produce financial reports for management, the Board, and associated entities. The role ensures GAAP/GASB compliance and strong internal controls.

The Controller will supervise several staff, manage payroll, grants administration, and donor reporting, and work with the CFO/COO to improve reporting accuracy and efficiency within a hybrid work environment in the Houston area.

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree in accounting or finance.
• Five to ten years of progressively increasing expertise and experience in finance and accounting.
• Solid experience coordinating audit activities and reporting to stakeholders; developing and analyzing budgets; maintaining best practices in accounts payable and receivable, general ledger, payroll, and accounting for investments.
• Strong interpersonal and communication skills; experience in effectively communicating data to staff and external stakeholders.

Responsibilities

• Oversee accounting staff, transactions, activities, and close processes; prepare internal and external financial reports for management and the Board of Directors for HPB, LGC, and Foundation.
• Lead day-to-day accounting functions; supervise 3–4 staff; ensure internal controls comply with nonprofit best practices and auditor recommendations.
• Assist CFO/COO in financial reporting and compliance; support program leadership with system controls and transparent reporting.
• Lead process improvements and automations to increase quality, efficiency, and productivity.
