Museum of the City of New York seeks a Controller to lead day-to-day accounting, budgeting, financial reporting, and the annual audit. The role supervises two staff and partners with senior leadership to ensure accurate records and strong internal controls.

The successful candidate will bring a nonprofit financial background, CPA preferred, and advanced Excel/Word skills to drive reporting and compliance across departments.

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree in accounting or finance is required; CPA is preferred.
• Minimum five years of financial management experience, nonprofit sector preferred.
• Thorough knowledge of nonprofit accounting principles and reporting standards.
• Excellent computer skills, advanced Excel and Word; experience with GL and AP systems.

Responsabilités

• Prepare and record payroll journal entries and other general ledger entries.
• Oversee payroll coordination with Human Resources and allocate costs by project codes.
• Supervise Staff Accountants for Accounts Receivable and Accounts Payable.
• Reconcile payroll and bank accounts; supervise additional reconciliations.
• Prepare monthly activity and income statements; review against budget.
• Assist CFO and department heads with budgets and reforecasts.
• Serve as primary contact for annual audit with external auditors.
• Prepare schedules and work papers for depreciation, payroll accruals, etc.
• Manage two full-time staff and provide guidance and performance oversight.
