Job summary

The Bronx is seeking an Accounting Manager for a nonprofit organization based in Newark, New Jersey. This hands-on leadership role oversees day-to-day accounting operations, ensures GAAP compliance, and partners with Finance, Development, IT and program teams to support accurate financial reporting and efficient systems.

You will serve as NetSuite subject matter expert, supervise AP/AR staff, lead monthly close, manage grants and revenue recognition, and drive process improvements.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field.
  • 5+ years of progressive nonprofit accounting experience.
  • Strong GAAP knowledge and nonprofit accounting principles.
  • Experience managing accounting operations and month-end close.
  • Advanced NetSuite ERP proficiency in a nonprofit environment.

Responsibilities

  • Oversee day-to-day accounting operations including A/P and A/R.
  • Lead monthly close with journal entries and reconciliations.
  • Ensure timely processing of vendor payments and receivables.
  • Maintain general ledger integrity and financial records.
  • Oversee grants, contributions, pledges, and deferred revenue.
  • Partner with Development to ensure revenue coding and recognition.
  • Support cash forecasting and liquidity planning.
  • Mentor AP/AR staff and drive process improvements.

Scion Nonprofit Staffing has been engaged to conduct a search for an Accounting Manager on behalf of our client, a highly respected nonprofit organization based in Newark, New Jersey. This is an exciting opportunity for a collaborative and hands-on accounting professional to join a mission-driven organization dedicated to serving its community through impactful programming and initiatives. The Accounting Manager will play a critical leadership role within the Finance team, overseeing day-to-day accounting operations while ensuring financial accuracy, compliance, and operational efficiency. The ideal candidate is a detail-oriented nonprofit accounting professional with strong NetSuite expertise, experience managing accounting operations, and a passion for continuous process improvement.

Position Overview Reporting to senior finance leadership, the Accounting Manager will oversee key accounting functions including accounts payable, accounts receivable, monthly close, cash management, and revenue recognition activities. This individual will collaborate cross-functionally with Finance, Development, IT, and program teams to support accurate financial reporting, strengthen internal processes, and optimize financial systems.

Key Responsibilities
  • Manage day-to-day accounting operations, including oversight of Accounts Payable and Accounts Receivable functions.
  • Lead the monthly close process, including journal entries, account reconciliations, fixed assets, and financial analyses.
  • Ensure timely and accurate processing of vendor payments, receivables, and related transactions.
  • Maintain the integrity and accuracy of the general ledger and supporting financial records.
  • Oversee accounting for grants, contributions, pledges, deferred revenue, and other funding sources in accordance with GAAP.
  • Partner with Development teams to ensure proper revenue coding and recognition.
  • Maintain accurate records related to grants, receivables, and deferred revenue.
  • Support cash forecasting, liquidity planning, and revenue reporting activities.
  • Identify and implement opportunities to improve accounting workflows, automate processes, and enhance reporting capabilities.
  • Serve as an internal NetSuite subject matter expert, providing training, documentation, and ongoing user support.
  • Partner with IT teams and external consultants on system integrations and enhancements, including NetSuite and related platforms.
  • Support the implementation and optimization of financial tools and technologies, including expense management solutions.
  • Supervise and mentor Accounts Payable and Accounts Receivable staff.
Required Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field.
  • 5+ years of progressive accounting experience, including significant nonprofit accounting experience.
  • Strong knowledge of GAAP and nonprofit accounting principles.
  • Demonstrated experience managing accounting operations and month-end close processes.
  • Advanced proficiency with NetSuite ERP, preferably within a nonprofit environment.
  • Strong analytical, organizational, and problem-solving skills.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience supervising AP and/or AR staff.
  • Experience with financial systems integrations, automation, and process improvement initiatives.
Compensation & Benefits

The organization offers a competitive salary ranging from $110,000 to $120,000 annually, along with a comprehensive benefits package that includes medical, dental, vision, retirement savings with employer match, paid time off, life insurance, and additional employee perks.
