Job summary

UAB Medicine is seeking a Non-Registered Polysomnographic Technician to perform sleep studies and assist in comprehensive sleep assessments. You will prepare equipment, apply sensors, and help score sleep stages under supervision, contributing to diagnostic testing and treatment under established protocols.

Eligibility includes a polysomnography program or related training, plus BLS certification (or obtained within 30 days).

Qualifications

• Polysomnography program or equivalent training completed.
• Eligible for A-STEP or END/CAAHEP accredited Sleep Technology program completion.
• High School diploma or GED; self-study modules accepted.
• BLS certification required or to be obtained within 30 days.

Responsibilities

• Perform physiological monitoring and testing for sleep disorders under supervision.
• Prepare and calibrate equipment, apply electrodes and sensors per standards.
• Score sleep/wake stages and other events under guidance of RPSGT.
• Review patient history and study protocol; orient patient to Sleep Center.

Job Description

Under the general supervision of a Registered Polysomnographic Technologist (RPSGT) or the Medical Director, to perform comprehensive physiological monitoring and testing, diagnosis, management and prevention of sleep related disorders using various diagnostic and therapeutic tools. To assist in clinical assessments. To complete all testing preparation procedures including preparation and calibration of equipment required for testing, applying electrodes and sensors according to applicable standards, and fit positive airway pressure (PAP) mask. To perform diagnostic testing, data acquisition, routine observations, documentation of sleep stages and any other significant events and implements appropriate therapeutic interventions according to proper protocols. To review patient history, physical information, medications, procedure request and study protocol. To explain the procedure and orient the patient to the Sleep Center. To assist in scoring sleep/wake stages and other clinical events according to professionally accepted guidelines under the supervision of a Registered Polysomnographic Technologist (RPSGT).

Qualifications

One (1) or more years experience as Non-Registered Polysomnographic Technician that has successfully completed trainee level job experience and meets all or exceeds required evaluation ratings for an entry level one (1) year evaluation OR a newly hired Non-Registered Technician with greater than one (1) year of experience working in a clinical Sleep Laboratory setting. OR Successful completion of a polysomnography program, of no less than one (1) year duration from a nationally accredited educational institution OR High School diploma or GED and successful completion of the A-STEP Online Self-Study Modules from the American Academy of Sleep Medicine (AASM) or a Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP) accredited Sleep Technology training program, an Electroneurodiagnostic (END) program, or a Respiratory Therapy add-on track for Sleep Technology required. Certified in Basic Life Support (BLS) from the American Heart Association (AHA) is required or should be obtained within 30 days of employment.
