Job summary

University of Michigan Health-West invites applications for a Patient Visual Monitor Technician in the Central Monitoring Unit. This 12hrs/week night shift role supports nursing staff by continuously observing patients to ensure safety and respond to behavioral changes using push-to-call devices and 2-way audio.

Under RN supervision, you will assist with activities of daily living, monitor up to sixteen patients visually, maintain equipment, and collaborate with the care team to promote patient

Qualifications

  • High School Diploma or GED required.
  • Completion of behavioral health education/training within 90 days of hire.
  • Basic Life Support (Healthcare Provider) within 6 months of hire.
  • Previous healthcare setting experience preferred.
  • Demonstrates outstanding dependability and self-discipline.
  • Excellent communication and teamwork skills.
  • Ability to operate, maintain and minorly repair equipment.
  • Ability to use a keyboard for job duties.
  • Ability to communicate with patients via push-to-call devices.
  • Ability to respond quickly to patient behavioral changes.

Responsibilities

  • Equipment & Technology: Ensure all equipment is clean, functional, and maintained; coordinate with HT and Clinical Engineering; keep workstation safe and stocked.
  • Patient Safety: Continuously observe patients and report changes to nursing staff; maintain a safe environment; intervene for falls.
  • Virtual Patient Monitoring & Safety: Demonstrate proficiency in virtual monitoring; redirect via 2-way audio and notify bedside care team when needed; monitor safety risks.
  • Direct Patient Care: Assist with activities of daily living including hygiene, nutrition, elimination; reposition and transport patients.
  • Documentation & Communication: Document care given and behavioral changes; communicate with RNs and team using available systems.
  • Collaboration & Professionalism: Provide patient explanations, participate in meetings and promote team efficiency.
  • Training & Competency: Complete unit-specific competencies; stay updated on procedures and safety practices.
  • Miscellaneous: Read to patients, reorient to time/place, perform tasks within scope delegated by RN; maintain a clean, safe work environment.
