Job summary

James Madison University is seeking a Trades Utilities Night Supervisor in Harrisonburg, VA. You will oversee a crew of 6–10 and handle work orders and emergency calls nightly, ensuring safe, reliable building operations across electrical, plumbing, and carpentry tasks.

The role requires deep knowledge of maintenance crafts, strong leadership, and the ability to coordinate multiple trades. This is a full-time, non-exempt position with opportunities for overtime under the Virginia labor standards.

Qualifications

• Strong knowledge of building maintenance crafts and systems including doors/locks hardware, plaster, paint, carpentry, masonry, floor maintenance and repair, furniture repair, plumbing/electrical/HVAC.

Responsibilities

• Supervise and direct a crew of 6 to 10 utilities staff.
• Handle nightly work orders and emergency calls.
• Record-keeping for building needs and repairs.
• Assign and administer jobs to appropriate team members.
• Repair or redirect work orders to FM departments as needed.
• Perform electrical tasks such as lighting installation/maintenance and emergency lighting checks.
• Perform plumbing tasks including valve replacements, fittings, and water conditioner checks.
• Carry out carpentry duties including installation and repair of fixtures and furniture.
• Fabricate/maintain building fixtures using various materials.
