Job summary

NAMI McHenry County is seeking a Recovery Support Specialist for our Living Room Program in Crystal Lake, IL. The RSS brings lived experience to provide hopeful, peer-based support to adults in emotional distress or mental health crises.

The role emphasizes one-on-one support, safety planning, and collaboration with a multidisciplinary team to ensure trauma-informed, recovery-oriented care with dignity and respect for every guest.

Qualifications

• High school diploma or GED required.
• CRSS certification or willingness to obtain within one year of hire.
• Lived experience with mental health recovery and appropriate use in peer support.
• Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
• Ability to pass all required background screenings.

Responsibilities

• Provide one-on-one peer support to adults in emotional distress or crises.
• Build trusting relationships to promote hope and recovery.
• Help guests identify strengths, recovery goals, and wellness strategies.
• Collaborate with guests to develop safety plans and next steps.
• Support coping skills and problem-solving strategies.
• Connect guests with community resources and ongoing support.
• De-escalate crises using trauma-informed, recovery-oriented approaches.
• Document accurately in the electronic health record and maintain confidentiality.
• Collaborate with Living Room staff and partners to improve services.
• Promote dignity, autonomy, and recovery-oriented care.
