Job summary

Simsbury Public Schools is seeking a Night Supervisory Custodian at Simsbury High School to supervise cleaning, maintenance, and security of the facility. The role supports a team of custodians and coordinates with the Custodial Coordinator/Supervisor and Building Principal.

The position is 40 hours per week, year-round, with full benefit package. Salary range is $35.22–$37.28 per hour, and employment follows the NAM contract. Posting remains open until filled.

Qualifications

• Two years' experience in general cleaning or maintenance work.
• Ability to lift and/or carry objects weighing from 25 to 50 pounds.
• Ability to work, occasionally, in poor weather conditions.

Responsibilities

• Plans work according to school or seasonal priority in conjunction with the SHS Custodial Coordinator/Supervisor.
• Organizes, supervises, and participates in cleaning, maintenance, and repair of school building, equipment, and adjacent grounds.
• Secures building at end of shift.
• Assigns cleaning, maintenance, and repair duties to custodians.
• Supervises custodial crew members assigned to the shift, making required adjustments to cleaning schedules as might be caused by staff absences or special events.
• Performs daily cleaning tasks.
• Maintains walks and grounds using power snow-blower, power mower, and hand tools.
• Performs minor maintenance and repair work using carpentry, painting, and plumbing skills.
• Plans and participates in general cleaning and maintenance work during school vacations.
• Assists in training custodians, including seasonal workers, in cleaning and maintenance activities.
• Works with the SHS Custodial Coordinator/Supervisor in the supervision of employees, makes recommendations concerning discipline and commendations, and contributes to employee evaluations.
• Follows standard safety procedures and regulations.
• In conjunction with the SHS Custodial Coordinator/Supervisor, prepares buildings and grounds for use by school and community organizations and serves as a point person representing the school administration with school and community groups that utilize the SHS facility.
• Assists visitors to school building.
• Regularly inspects buildings and equipment and reports problems to SHS Custodial Coordinator/Supervisor.
• Regularly checks operation of heating equipment and fuel level.
• Performs other duties as may be assigned.

• Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions provided in written, oral, or diagrammatic form.
• Proven ability to communicate effectively with members of the school and community organizations who utilize the facility.
• Proven ability to effectively manage a team of more than 5 custodians.

REPORTS TO: Simsbury High School Custodial Coordinator/Supervisor and Building Principal

JOB GOAL: To supervise the cleaning, maintenance, and security of the school building, equipment, and grounds; to respond to emergency situations in the school building such as power failure, plumbing, heating, or vandalism problems; and to serve as a point person representing the school administration with school and community groups that utilize the SHS facility.
