Job summary

Norwell Community Schools is seeking a School Custodian at Norwell High School to keep the building clean and well-maintained for students and staff. Second shift is 3:00pm–11:30pm and third shift is 10:00pm–6:30am, providing year-round employment.

A starting hourly wage of $18.50 is offered. The position requires a high school diploma or GED, ability to perform physical tasks, and the capacity to operate custodial cleaning equipment. AHERA Awareness Training is preferred.

Qualifications

• Ability to read and comprehend simple instructions, short correspondence, and memos
• Ability to write simple correspondence and communicate effectively with staff
• Must be able to operate custodial cleaning equipment and perform tasks safely

Responsibilities

• Performs duties to keep the school clean, orderly, and well-maintained (sweeping, mopping, scrubbing, vacuuming, cleaning chalkboards, emptying trash)
• Performs routine duties (painting, window washing, floor wax, carpet cleaning, minor utilities)
• Moves furniture and equipment as directed by head custodian
• Complies with laws/procedures for storage and disposal of trash and waste
• Performs light snow removal and salt application
• Participates in training as directed by supervisor
• Performs other tasks as assigned

SUMMARY

Keeps the school building clean, orderly, and well-maintained.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

include the following:

1. Performs duties involved in keeping the school clean, orderly, and well-maintained, such as sweeping, mopping, scrubbing, and vacuuming classrooms, offices, hallways, and stairs; cleaning chalkboards; emptying pencil sharpeners; cleaning and disinfecting restrooms and drinking fountains; and emptying trash/garbage containers.

2. Performs the routine duties involved in keeping the school clean, orderly, and well-maintained with regard to painting, window washing, removal and re-application of floor wax, carpet cleaning, and minor activities involved with system utilities.

3. Moves furniture and/or equipment as directed by the head custodian.

4. Complies with local and state laws and procedures for the storage and disposal of trash, rubbish, and waste.

5. Performs light snow removal and salt application to icy walkways.

6. Participates in training as directed by the Supervisor of Buildings and Grounds.

7. Performs such other tasks as may from time to time be assigned.

QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE

High school diploma or general education degree (GED), or three to six months related experience and/or training, or equivalent combination of education and experience.

LANGUAGE SKILLS

Ability to read and comprehend simple instructions, short correspondence, and memos. Ability to write simple correspondence. Ability to effectively communicate in one-on-one and small group situations to Supervisor of Buildings and Grounds, Head Custodian, principal/assistant principal, and other employees of the corporation.

MATHEMATICAL SKILLS

Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals. Ability to compute rate, ratio, and percent and interpret bar graphs.

REASONING ABILITY

Ability to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagram form. Ability to deal with problems involving several concrete variables in standardized situations.

CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS

Successful completion of an AHERA Awareness Training Program.

OTHER SKILLS

Ability to operate all custodial cleaning equipment. Ability to maintain and model a positive attitude towards students, peers, and other employees.

Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.
