Job summary

American Water is seeking a distribution operator to respond to emergencies and manage field crews for water and wastewater distribution tasks. You will locate, operate, and repair mains, hydrants, and valves while monitoring safety and regulatory compliance.

The role includes night hours, local travel, and potential overtime, with emphasis on data recording and customer service. Training and growth opportunities are provided within the company.

Qualifications

• Must have geographic knowledge of the service area and basic fluid principles.
• Knowledge of safety practices and regulations for confined spaces, trenching and Competent Person.
• Ability to locate and safely repair components of the transmission and distribution system.
• Capable of operating company equipment and vehicles necessary for the job.

Responsibilities

• Lead employees and coordinate use of equipment and personnel to ensure safe operations.
• Analyze jobs to determine resources; mobilize staff in emergencies and follow overtime procedures.
• Locate, access, operate, and repair mains, hydrants, valves, and related fixtures.
• Investigate hydraulic variations and initiate corrective actions to protect service.
• Perform tests such as fire flows and pressure checks on the distribution system.
• Complete house-to-house connections and mark-out other utilities as needed.
• Record data and maintain accurate records of field activities.
• Respond to inquiries and resolve customer and company issues for service quality.
• Conduct water loss audits and assess usage patterns at customer accounts.
• Daily local travel and potential overtime; operate during various weather conditions.
