Job summary

RWJBarnabas Health is seeking a Unit Secretary for the RWJUH Rahway Hospital Emergency Department. The role is hourly, night shift, with pay in the NJ range, and supports nurses by handling admissions, orders, documentation, and patient-flow coordination.

You will greet patients and families, answer calls, and maintain accurate records while collaborating with the care team to ensure smooth operations and high-quality patient experiences.

Qualifications

• High school diploma or equivalent.
• Experience in clerical, administrative, or customer service roles.
• Strong communication, organizational, multitasking, and computer skills.
• Experience as Unit Clerk/Secretary or in a hospital/medical office preferred.
• Knowledge of medical terminology, EMR, physician order entry, and healthcare documentation preferred.

Responsibilities

• Welcoming patients, families, visitors, and physicians while providing exceptional customer service.
• Answering telephones, call bells, and intercoms, directing requests to the appropriate team members.
• Coordinating patient admissions, transfers, and discharges with accurate patient information.
• Entering physician orders and updating patient records using electronic medical record systems.
• Preparing, organizing, and maintaining reports and unit documentation.
• Supporting the daily operations of the nursing station by maintaining supplies and an organized work environment.
• Collaborating with physicians, nurses, and the interdisciplinary healthcare team to promote efficient workflows and positive patient experiences.
