Qualifications

• Education: High school diploma or GED, or equivalent.
• Experience: Six (6) months of experience collecting blood specimens.
• Licensure or certification: None required.

Responsibilities

• Properly identifies patient before obtaining specimen and labels the samples.
• Performs laboratory procedures which must be accomplished at time of collection.
• Transports patients’ specimens to the laboratory or arranges delivery.
• Keys and verifies computer input data and produces specimen labels and reports.
• Resolves routine problems related to specimen collection.
• Coordinates the dispatch log for outside laboratory shipments.
• Uses lab computer system to enter and retrieve patient information.
• Consults with medical staff on laboratory services matters.
• Answers telephones, routes calls and provides information to callers.
• Sets up, calibrates and cleans laboratory centrifuges.
• Requests and orders supplies to keep materials on hand.
• Assists in training new personnel in the department policies.
