Job summary

The University of Iowa Health Care is seeking a Patient Care Technician for the Float Pool, 60% Nights at the Downtown Campus in Iowa City. Under supervision, you will assist nursing staff with in-patient and out-patient care, performing a variety of procedures and maintaining patient comfort and safety.

Shift includes evenings, with weekend and holiday rotation. Responsibilities include vital signs, phlebotomy, specimen collection, patient transfers, hygiene care, and documentation.

Qualifications

• Ability to follow oral and written instructions.
• Ability to communicate effectively with patients, families, and health care staff.
• Ability to maintain patient confidentiality.
• Knowledge of medical terminology, instruments and supplies.
• Ability to collect patient data and maintain accurate records.
• Knowledge of sanitation and infection control principles.
• Knowledge of keyboarding and computer data entry skills.

Responsibilities

• Independently obtain and record vital signs (temperature, pulse, respiration, blood pressure).
• Carry out medical asepsis for procedures including phlebotomy and catheter care.
• Perform simple diagnostic and therapeutic tasks (enemas, wound care, dressing changes).
• Assist with admissions, transfers, and discharges.
• Provide for patients’ personal hygiene and comfort.
• Turn, position, and ambulate patients; transport patients and supplies.
• Assist with meals and intake/output documentation.
• Participate in nursing care conferences and report relevant information.
