Job summary

Duke University Health System Laboratory Supervisors oversee day-to-day patient testing in the Central Automated Lab at Duke University Hospital. You will plan, coordinate, and direct testing to ensure supplies and qualified staff are available to meet care standards.

The role requires a Certified Medical Laboratory Scientist with at least 5 years of experience, strong leadership, and extensive knowledge of QA, safety, and regulatory compliance.

Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree in Medical Technology or related field.
• Minimum CLIA requirements met by the employee for the tasks performed.
• 5 years full-time experience as a medical technologist.
• ASCP, NCA or equivalent certification.
• Thorough knowledge of safety, infection control and regulatory standards.
• Ability to train, orient and evaluate laboratory staff.
• Strong communication with doctors, nurses and staff.
• Ability to schedule and manage laboratory personnel.

Responsibilities

• Supervise the work of laboratory personnel performing routine and specialized procedures.
• Develop and implement quality control programs to ensure reliability and regulatory compliance.
• Prepare technical reports reflecting workload and test results; coordinate analyses and reports.
• Participate in development of new laboratory procedures and techniques; plan and conduct workshops.
• Coordinate student rotations and training in laboratory methods.
• Design work schedules and manage daily assignments to maintain staffing levels.
• Monitor quality control, safety, and inspection activities; maintain inventory within budget.
• Communicate professionally with patients and medical staff; ensure accurate records.
