Job summary

Rock County is seeking a highway maintenance worker to perform manual labor and operate hand tools, motorized hand tools, and motor vehicles for road and right-of-way maintenance and repair. The role involves operating a range of equipment and vehicles from trucks to loaders and rollers in various weather and traffic conditions.

You will be responsible for repairing road surfaces, maintaining rights-of-way, removing snow, and ensuring traffic safety and efficient flow.

Qualifications

• Graduation from a standard high school or vocational school or equivalent experience sufficient to provide the knowledge, skills and abilities required of the position.
• Must possess a valid Commercial Drivers License (Class A) when hired and a working telephone.
• Must possess and maintain a current unrestricted (not due to corrective lenses) driver's license and auto insurance.
• Positions in the job class this position is assigned to are subject to random drug and alcohol testing pursuant to Department of Transportation rules and regulations.

Responsibilities

• Troubleshoot, maintain and repair assigned roads.
• Repairs and maintains road surfaces using shovels, asphalt rakes, grade stakes, brooms, air compressors and jack hammers.
• Repairs and maintains right-of-way areas by mowing, removing brush, tree limbs and rubbish, spreading crushed rock, shaping ditches, spreading black dirt and laying sod or seeding.
• Removes snow and maintains roadways using snow plows, wings, underbelly blades, and sanding trucks.
• Sets up and takes down snow fences as directed.
• Controls traffic by setting barricades, cones, and arrow boards and by using hand signals and flags to ensure safety and smooth traffic flow.
• Constructs and repairs spillways, curbs, guardrails, storm drains and culverts using cement mixers, curbing machines, wrenches, shovels, jack hammers, stakes and tapes.
• Performs other duties as assigned.
• Operates a variety of vehicles and equipment; maintains logs and inventories.
